Here's why the IoT has been compared to the Industrial revolution

Here's why the IoT has been compared to the Industrial revolution | Future of Cloud Computing | Scoop.it
Today, the Internet of Things is rapidly building connections between devices, starting with wearables, cars and appliances.

Richard Platt's curator insight, June 1, 12:07 AM

The Internet of Things will not only give birth to new lifecycles of products and services; significant work will be required to build the infrastructure that will power connected devices. A report from Goldman Sachs says that, “Expanding the telecom, cable, and satellite pipelines that carry traffic through broader Wi-Fi networks is a critical part. But also providing devices with the sensor, memory chips and software necessary to communicate with the pipes is key.”  - In a similar manner to which the building of roads and railroads powered the Industrial Revolution of the 18th to 19th centuries, the building of these new networks will power the changes that Internet of Things will bring about. The Industrial Revolution sparked an era of mass production powered by machinery. Society also shifted so that less people were dependant on farming to earn a living and instead moved to urban centers to pursue jobs in factories. The changes that were brought about by the Industrial Revolution were permanent.

Italy of Things: Smart home projects propelling €1.55bn Italian IoT market | ZDNet

Italy of Things: Smart home projects propelling €1.55bn Italian IoT market | ZDNet | Future of Cloud Computing | Scoop.it

Italy's Internet of Things market is set to reach €1.55bn this year, with smart home products driving it forward.

"There are basically three fields which we see growing exponentially," Miragliotta said. "First of all, smart car applications: the GPS and GPRS boxes used by insurance companies to locate and keep track of vehicles' usage. There are currently almost 4.5 million connected cars on the road, or 12 percent of all cars out there."

Another sector with lots of potential, albeit one which currently represents only a small fraction of Internet of Things applications, is 'smart homes'. A survey of 1,000 homeowners found that 46 percent of respondents are willing to buy 'intelligent' products or services for their home in the near future. ...

Intel Nears Agreement to Buy Altera for About $54 a Share

Intel Nears Agreement to Buy Altera for About $54 a Share | Future of Cloud Computing | Scoop.it
Intel Corp. is on the cusp of agreeing to buy rival chip maker Altera Corp. for about $54 a share, according to people familiar with the matter. The $17 billion deal could be announced Monday.

Richard Platt's curator insight, June 1, 12:55 AM

Intel’s bid continues a consolidation wave in the semiconductor industry—a particularly active sector for deal making of late in a red-hot year for mergers and acquisitions—as companies search for new sources of revenue growth and target chip makers finding it hard to boost profitability on their own. Avago Technologies Ltd. on Thursday announced a $37 billion deal to buy Broadcom Corp., the largest technology acquisition on record.  - Altera’s business is also widely seen as a way for Intel to protect its stronghold in chips for server systems, a market that generated more than half of Intel’s operating profit in the quarter ended in March. Companies have lately been using chips from Altera and rival Xilinx Inc. to help speed up their servers, and some analysts believe Intel needs to have an internal source of the technology to respond to the trend.
