Why the music industry should be very worried that Spotify has only 5 million subscribers, worldwide.

Today, in an event in New York, Spotify announced its most recent stats. The high notes in these statistics were the claims of 5 million paying subscribers, 1 million of which are in the US. I beli...

antònia folguera's insight:

Maybe the access to an infinite catalog of music anytime, anywhere and in every device is not the future. Specially if we keep on paying too much for bad internet connections at home and mobile (Spain). On top of this paying for premium feature services for photos, videos, etc.

Wav.Pool: A record club from a group of NYC's best

Wav.Pool: A record club from a group of NYC's best | Future Music | Scoop.it
The cultural imagination of dance music includes NYC to such a degree that the two are mutually exclusive.
In recent years, NYC has seen the dance music scene grow in myriad directions, perhaps no...
antònia folguera's insight:

Considering a Drip.fm subscription. Up to that moment is the only subscription service that I am willing to pay for. And wav.pool is the responsible for that. The labels under the Wav.pool umbrella, release their music almost exclusively on vinyl that sells out rapidly. I guess that early access and exclusivity is what cuts it for me.

5 Companies That Will Define The Future Of Radio

5 Companies That Will Define The Future Of Radio | Future Music | Scoop.it
Who's forging the future of radio? It's still early, but keep an ear on this handful of businesses already pounding out that future.

Via Yvan Boudillet
antònia folguera's insight:

I think that the headline should have been: Five companies that are helping define the future of Radio. Probably will be other companies or inventions, that will define it. The radio content itself should be redefined. Hot 100 and Top 40 formulas are outdated.

Music-Streaming Services Hunt For Paying Customers
NPR
2012 has been a strange year for content creators — authors, producers, musicians.
antònia folguera's insight:

The song is getting boring: Ownership vs Access. Personally I'd rather own. There is no guarantee that all the music will be on the internet forever if you confide in streaming services, youtube or whatever. The only thing that can guarantee access forever is P2P. If someone has something on their shared folder, it'll always be available, as people themselves are the responsibles for the availability of stuff on the network.

antònia folguera's insight:

Once a trend during the late seventies and the eighties, a guilty pleasure all through the nineties and part of the noughties, now a genre that everyday gets more and more respect. Some of the key recordings are much coveted for collectors who spend hundreds of dollars/euros/whatever to own obscure and not so obscure records. We're talking Italo Disco, and here's a documentary about it, big shoulderpads included

IFPI Norway has published its music sales figures for 2012, and they provide more evidence to support the idea that streaming music can help
antònia folguera's insight:

I have only one question regarding that: Why? Why sales have increased thanks to streaming. Why norwegians choose streaming? why in other countries is not a popular option? The problem with statistics and numbers is that there is never an answer. Without the "why"it's impossible to move further.

Leveling Up: Is the Music Industry Ripe for Gamification?

Leveling Up: Is the Music Industry Ripe for Gamification? | Future Music | Scoop.it

I’ve become addicted to thinking about gamification thanks to a class I took about the topic via Coursera, an online education platform. It’s impossible not to. The...
antònia folguera's insight:

I ask myself this question all the time, and answers come easy, for hardcore music fans, gamification (or competition) is always there. Get all the albums of a certain band/label, see if you can beat your own score of the amount of times you can see a certain band/dj/artist live etc. So, gamification shouldn't be difficult, if it's specially aimed at music nerds. The app music industry never has the music nerd in mind, if the service is reeeeally good, then it shouldn't be difficult for users to want to pay for it.
