Daphne Koller: What we're learning from online education | Video on TED.com

Daphne Koller is enticing top universities to put their most intriguing courses online for free -- not just as a service, but as a way to research how people learn.
Rob van Tol's insight:

From co-founder of Coursera.

- Familiar course structure

- But breakup some of limitations (eg, 1 hour lecture) into 8-12 mins

- Personalised curriculum

- Repeat practice and question - not just passive viewing

- Grading by multiple choice, maths, models, programming

- Grading by peer-grading for open topics, as they correlate closely with teacher grading (Sadler & Good, Educational Assessment, 2006)

- Self-grading (when properly incentivised and set against critical criteria) correlates very well to teacher grades

- Community of students - Students ask questions, and other students answer them, and formed study groups - local and cross cultural

- Able to collect full data on human learning

- Personalisation - 2 Sigma Problem: The search for methods of group instruction as effective as one-to-one tutoring (Bloom 1984) - Lecture, Lecture + Mastery (can't move on to next topic), and 1-on-1 tutoring: mastery learning (1 sigma) is easy for computers who never tire.

SOLE (Self Organised Learning Environment) Challenge - Sugata Mitra | Future Learning | Scoop.it

- Granny Cloud

- Teacher raises the question, stands back, and admires the answer
