Clegg and PM at odds on green levies

Clegg and PM at odds on green levies | Games, Behaviour Change, Energy and Health | Scoop.it
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg says he does not agree with the prime minister's bid to "roll back" green levies pushing up energy bills.
Chris Hillier's insight:

Whilst the roll back won't ultimately solve a financial problem  (the money will have to come from somewhere, likely general taxation) anything that increases consumer understanding and transparency about what their energy bills actually pay for, could be a positive step toward a long term strategy for improved consumer engagement and trust in utilities and the wider energy market  - the importance of which should not be undervalued.

Chris Hillier's insight:

Projects like this demonstrate consumer hunger for accurate and timely information that enables them to take control of their energy use. Annual gas and electricity bills will soar above £1,500 for the first time later this year after Npower today unveiled an increase of more than 10 per cent across the UK.
Chris Hillier's insight:

Spare a thought for the energy retailers....Around £200 of each annual utility bill goes to the Government in a mix of tax and subsidy for social and environmental programmes. (Not to mention the upcoming costs of the obligatory smart meter rollout. Yes, you'll be paying for this too). So, instead of a direct tax with impact on electoral popularity the energy retailers are made to collect on behalf of the government and take the reputational hit. More seriously, this is putting consumer trust and engagement at risk - something that will be vital in the future of smart energy networks.

Chris Hillier's insight:

As the emerging smart grid demands engaged consumers to actively participate in their network, flat rate billing and price hikes risk negating any percieved benefits from consumer behaviour change and a spiral of disengagement could result.
