OVERVIEW

The Overview Effect, first described by author Frank White in 1987, is an experience that transforms astronauts’ perspective of the planet and mankind’s place upon it.

Common features of the experience are a feeling of awe for the planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment.

‘Overview’ is a short film that explores this phenomenon through interviews with five astronauts who have experienced the Overview Effect. The film also features insights from commentators and thinkers on the wider implications and importance of this understanding for society, and our relationship to the environment.

Anne Caspari's insight:

  Must watch. All of it.

2012: Moving Toward Evolution By Choice Not Chance | Futurable Planet: Answers from a Shifted Paradigm. | Scoop.it

Evolution raises consciousness and freedom through more complex order. Elinor Ostrom Outlines Best Strategies for Managing the Commons | On the Commons | Futurable Planet: Answers from a Shifted Paradigm. | Scoop.it

A breakthrough for the commons came in 2009 when Elinor Ostrom won the Nobel Prize for Economics. The first woman awarded this honor, the Indiana University political scientist not only made history but also helped debunk widespread notions that the commons inevitably leads to tragedy. In 50 years of research from Nepal to Kenya to Switzerland to Los Angeles, she has shown that commonly held resources will not be destroyed by overuse if there is a system in place to manage how they are shared.

Integral Reflection on Occupy Wall Street Protests — Integral Thinkers | Futurable Planet: Answers from a Shifted Paradigm. | Scoop.it
Integral thinker Barrett Brown reflects on Occupy Wall Street protests. Offers an integral perspective our crumbling economic and political systems.

I have seen the awesomely powerful socio-technical forces, regimes, and technological and institutional and economic lock-in that keep the status quo alive. It is the sheer scale of it that most overwhelms my conceptual mind and individual heart.....A vision for where to go and who we want to become must arise that resonates across all those levels and systems. Those are some of the key conditions required. That sort of alignment is possible although it will likely take years and be messy....
