Success Starts at the Top: Supporting a Mobile Learning Initiative

Success Starts at the Top: Supporting a Mobile Learning Initiative | Technology "Empower Education" | Scoop.it

Administrative support is the most important factor of a school's success with any program. School heads, leaders, department heads, business officers, and other decision makers will want to attend this session, discussing the do's and don'ts of implementing mobile devices. Spanning across all aspects involved, topics discussed will include technical requirements and best practices, professional development, BYOD vs school-owned, public relations, parental involvement, student preparedness, and much more.

Felix Jacomino

is the Director of Technology at St. Stephen's Episcopal Day School in Coconut Grove, Florida. St. Stephen's is a 1:1 iPad school for grades 1 through 5 and has received much attention in the educational technology community for being one of the very first elementary schools to embark on this mobile learning initiative. Felix's administrative position is two-fold at his school. He is the IT manager and the Educational Technology expert. The combination of his education degree and network engineering certifications allows him to drive both sides of what makes technology integration successful. Project based learning, Common Core Standards, and appropriate technology use are at the top of Felix's current interests.

Being purposeful about incorporating technology in our learning tasks will be vital to being an effective teacher. Students need to be taught how to use these tools and navigate the volume of information the internet presents. Using technology without direction and purpose can create problems and wastes tremendous potential.

it442's curator insight, May 16, 2013 10:04 PM

Elsa Mansfield-This article talks about using technology to learn instead of learning how to use technology. Integration involves making technology a part of the everyday classroom, and using it to engage studetns with information or content. I like the idea of being very purposeful with employing technology in a variety of ways and incorporating technology in our learning tasks constantly.  Using technology without direction and purpose can create problems and wastes tremendous potential.

Ten Reasons why technology is vital to education

In a typical high school a student has access to a teacher 40 minutes per day. That means she has access to that teacher 5% of her waking day, and even that time is shared with 25 classmates. She has access to the Internet 100% of the time. That's 20X better.

Via Felix Jacomino
Mack James's insight:

Technology can open up various ways for accessing learning tools and as well as connecting peer to peer diccussion even out side the regular classroom, keeping them engaged in the learning process

Felix Jacomino's comment, March 31, 2013 5:41 PM
Maybe not for "answers," but definitely encouragement! I think this is one of the reasons why it's more exciting than EVER to be a teacher! You learn with the students and use your wisdom to guide them, rather than merely feeding facts and testing their ability to memorize.
David W. Deeds's curator insight, April 1, 2013 10:03 AM

Give a student a link and he'll read for a day. Teach a student how to surf and he'll read forever. Or something like that. ;)
