Free e-book - Applying Science of Learning in Education

Free e-book - Applying Science of Learning in Education | Technology "Empower Education" | Scoop.it

This edited book represents a sliver, albeit a substantial one, of the scholarship on the science of learning and its application in educational settings. Most of the work described in this book is based on theory and research in cognitive psychology. Although much, but not all, of what is presented is focused on learning in college and university settings, teachers of all academic levels may find the recommendations made by chapter authors of service. Authors wrote their chapters with nonexperts as the target audience – teachers who may have little or no background in science of learning, research-based approaches to teaching and learning, or even general principles of psychological science. The book is organized in three sections. The 14 chapters in Part 1 address important concepts, principles, theories, and research findings, and applications related to the science of learning. The four chapters in Part 2 focus on preparing faculty to apply science of learning principles in their courses. Finally, the six chapters in Part 3 provide examples of research that have been done in real academic settings and that have applied one or more science of learning principles.

Kleinspiration: 5 Creative Apps to Connect with Parents from your Classroom! | Technology "Empower Education" | Scoop.it

"Having a positive relationship with the parents of your students can help your year get off to a great start. I've found that parents often just want to feel connected and involved. Many potential issues can be resolved when they feel like they understand what is going on inside the classroom. As a parent, I know that my husband and I often feel the most uneasy when we don't know when an event is happening or how to help with an assignment. Therefore, as a teacher, I've searched for and tried out numerous tools to help be more proactive in the classroom to solve any issues before they evolve into problems. The feedback I've received from families has been overwhelmingly positive.  "

Saying that it has always been this way, doesn’t count as a legitimate justification to why it should stay that way. Teacher and administrators all over the world are doing amazing things, but some of the things we are still doing, despite all the new solutions, research and ideas out there is, to put it mildly, incredible.

Felix Jacomino-The Many Facets of Technology Integration | Technology "Empower Education" | Scoop.it

We are so excited to be joined by Felix Jacomino as our special guest presenter to hear about his experience and leadership with integrating technology in his 1:1 iPad initiative at St. Stephen's Episcopal Day School in Coconut Grove, Florida. He is also the creator and host of Miami Device, a mobile learning event presented by his school in November of 2014.

Technology used to be synonymous with a stand-alone computer, in a lab, with a schedule for students to go and learn about its parts, history, and use them at the lowest level of the SAMR model. Today, we're starting to leave 1:1 behind and talking X:1 because of ubiquitous presence of mobile devices in every part of our lives. Just because we have a lot of devices though, does not mean they are used the best ways possible. And sometimes, that can mean putting them aside.

Effective, ongoing, and quality professional development is the key to an environment where students are empowered by enthusiastic teachers who are mentors and well-aware of the endless ways these tools can be leveraged to best meet each student's goals.

How to Turn Infographics Into Effective Teaching Tools

How to Turn Infographics Into Effective Teaching Tools | Technology "Empower Education" | Scoop.it

Infographics have already established themselves as engaging news and marketing tools, but they are also entering the education space in new and exciting ways.

A good graphic can fit these standards by reinforcing to students that their conclusions should be grounded in evidence and by challenging their ability to organize a hierarchy of systems, a.k.a. the ability to tell what pieces of information are the most important.
