Five Primary Principals that Define Functional Medicine

Five Primary Principals that Define Functional Medicine | Functional Medicine | Scoop.it

While many celebrity voices such as Dr. Oz, Dr. Mark Hyman, and Dr. Frank Lipman have been boasting about functional medicine being the future of health care, it is still a fairly unknown practice. It varies dramatically from current western medicine as well as conventional medicine. While doctors traditionally use drugs, surgery, and hormones as treatments for disease and injuries, it fails to effectively treat chronic disease. Considering chronic disease currently affects approximately 125 million Americans and rising, obviously a newer, more effective approach at handling chronic disease is necessary.

This is such a controversial topic and such a horrible disease.  I have patients suffering from Lyme Disease and it's not only heart wrenching to see them struggle from the disease, but to see their struggles with the corruption and politics surrounding it is even more difficult.  I recommend everyone be informed, not only about this issue but all health issues.  Do you really want to inject Lyme disease into your body?

The Neurobiology of Grace Under Pressure

The Neurobiology of Grace Under Pressure | Functional Medicine | Scoop.it
8 habits that stimulate your vagus nerve and keep you calm, cool, and collected.
Michelle Caplan's insight:
Understand the Power of your Vagus nerve! Your vagus nerve stems from your cerebellum and brain stem, and has branches that reach down to your heart and almost all vital organs of your abdomen.  Your vagus nerve sends sensory information about these organs to your brain. When you say “trust your gut” what you are really saying is trust your vagus nerve!  "Visceral feelings and gut-instincts are literally emotional intuitions transferred up to your brain via the vagus nerve." This is a great article that clearly and simply explains the roles of our sympathetic vs. parasympathetic nervous systems and how to improve the health and effectiveness of your vagus nerve, the commander in chief of your parasympathetic (rest & digest) nervous system to reduce anxiety, and increase your overall health and wellbeing.

Princeton University Seeks to Use Students in Unapproved Vaccine Trial | Health Impact News | Functional Medicine | Scoop.it
Dr. Sherri Tenpenny shares some facts regarding the meningitis outbreak at Princeton University, and the dangers associated with the unapproved vaccine that is being proposed to be tested on students.
Michelle Caplan's insight:

This is a very well written and informative article about the Meningitis "outbreak" at Princeton University earlier last month.  The story may have gotten the attention of many of you with college age children.  But if you have children of any age, I would encourage you to read and understand about all vaccines.  The media told us about the outbreak, the "epidemic" actually, and urged parents to encourage their children get vaccinated.  But it's what they failed to tell us that is actually so important!  For example: "Manufacturing a similar cell-wall antigen vaccine is not possible for serotype B bacteria. The sugar sequences on the surface of this bacteria are very similar to the sugar sequences on the surface of human brain and nerve cells. Therefore, vaccine-induced antibodies can attack the brain and the nerves, causing a debilitating, life-long, autoimmune reaction."  This should make you think twice about other vaccines, Guardasil for instance, and the reports of dangerous debilitating side effects.

Stefan Larsson: What doctors can learn from each other | Video on TED.com

Different hospitals produce different results on different procedures. Only, patients don’t know that data, making choosing a surgeon a high-stakes guessing game.
Michelle Caplan's insight:

Many patients ask me why I have chosen not to contract as a provider with any of the insurance companies.  A number of people don't choose me as their physician because I am not contracted with insurance companies.   I ran across this TED talk and it made an impression on me.  Are we forgetting about the Patient?  Dr. Stefan Larson points out that most health care systems are based on costs of care and limit the degree of freedom a physician has as a way to hold costs down.  He states that doctors and nurses are the target, as they are the ones making often costly decisions.  "My Colleagues don't have the full liberty to make choices and make the decisions that they think are right for their patients."   He shows how doctors learning from each other can create value based health care and increase outcomes.  This is already being done in Sweden.  He predicts a paradigm shift in health care, stating that "the agents of change are the doctors and nurses... " and talks about development of Global Standards in Health care.  So my answer to those questions about contracting with insurance companies ~ I prefer to be the change by reserving my right as a physician to have the freedom to make the decisions I feel are best for the patient and not their insurance company.

For the last 10 years, I have been involved in researching the impact of meditation on health and well-being. This infographic summarized some of the key findings about the benefits of meditation.
Michelle Caplan's insight:

Great article!  Who knew meditation had so many evidence based benefits, and it's current research from Stanford. There is no reason not to take 10 minutes of every day to do some type of meditation.  I have to admit that I am one to make excuses why I can't make time to stop and meditate, but this inspires me to make a different choice, and create the space in a busy life to do it every day.  So many of us are dashing off from work to school, taking kids to soccer, volleyball, then taking care of dinner, chores, etc... we put ourselves at the bottom of the list.   Well, ere are so many reasons that benefit not only you but your entire family ~ take 10 minutes to meditate...
