The Time-Traveling Fashionista Book Trailer

THE TIME-TRAVELING FASHIONISTA™
AND CLEOPATRA, QUEEN OF THE NILE

Walk, talk, and dress like an Egyptian.

When Louise Lambert tries on a lavender Grecian gown during a visit to the mysterious Traveling Fashionista Vintage Sale, she feels a familiar tug and falls back in time, arriving at the dusty base of an enormous pyramid. She has landed in ancient Egypt…or has she?

It turns out that Louise is on the legendary Old Hollywood film set of Cleopatra, but her time there is short-lived. Rummaging through the wardrobe tent, Louise gets her hands on a pearl necklace that dates back to 51 BC, and she suddenly finds herself whisked away once more, this time to the ancient city of Alexandria, Egypt. Gold and jewels shimmer in the Egyptian sunlight, but poisonous snakes and dangerous enemies also roam the palace halls. Louise quickly learns that life as a handmaiden to Queen Cleopatra is much more treacherous–and fashionable–than she ever could have imagined.

Crone LMC's insight:

Fashion, adventure, and excitement all in one book.

SEEING RED songs to make you read!

SEEING RED songs to make you read! | Fun Fiction Fridays | Scoop.it

Life will never be the same for Red Porter. He’s a kid growing up around black car grease, white fence paint, and the backward attitudes of the folks who live in his hometown, Stony Gap, Virginia.

Red’s daddy, his idol, has just died, leaving Red and Mama with some hard decisions and a whole lot of doubt.  Should they sell the Porter family business, a gas station, repair shop, and convenience store, rolled into one, where the slogan  — “Porter’s: We Fix It Right!” — has been shouting the family’s pride for as long as anyone can remember?

With Daddy gone, everything’s different. Through his friendship with Thomas, Beau, Rosie, and Miss Georgia, Red starts to see there’s a lot more than car motors and rusty fenders that need fixing in his world.

Crone LMC's insight:

Enjoy the playlist of songs that inspired Red.  Will they also inspire you?

Counting by 7's by Holly Goldberg Sloan - An Anderson's Mock Newbery nominee

Counting by 7's by Holly Goldberg Sloan - An Anderson's Mock Newbery nominee | Fun Fiction Fridays | Scoop.it

"Counting By 7s is the story of Willow Chance, a twelve-year old girl who has been identified at an early age as ‘gifted’. Willow lives in Bakersfield, California and comes home from school one day to the news that her parents have been killed in a traffic accident.

What follows is Willow’s search to find a place where she belongs.

In equal parts an exploration of the pain of loss and of the triumph of moving forward, the novel looks at how one person can change the lives of many, often without even trying."

Crone LMC's insight:

I loved Counting by 7's in the same way I loved Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper and Wonder by R. J. Palacio.  You know when a book takes you so deeply into the experience of a character that you're convinced you can smell the scent of the pine trees in a garden in the book - you know this is a book that inspires true empathy, to your core, experienced with all your senses.

Be sure to explore the author's web site, especially  her list of Twenty-Five Things in the section entitled About Holly.

New Voice: A.B. Westrick on Brotherhood Mock Newbery nominee for 2014

New Voice: A.B. Westrick on Brotherhood Mock Newbery nominee for 2014 | Fun Fiction Fridays | Scoop.it

Read how author Anne Westrick wrote the first draft of her amazing, debut novel in FIRST PERSON.  "I love to draft in first person-present because it’s intense. It’s arresting. First person-present forces me to enter into my protagonist’s world and imagine his actions as if they are happening right now: I smell what he smells, and touch what he touches. I taste, see and hear the specific, concrete moments of his life....But my first person-present version was over the top! My protagonist is an illiterate 14 year-old boy whose awful grammar is difficult to read. Sure, I created a strong voice with an honest cadence rolling on the page—I could hear him speak—but the choppiness of the dialect detracted from the story. I had to let it go."

Crone LMC's insight:

My favorite quote from Brotherhood:

Rachel, a 12-year-old educated girl and also a recently freed slave, says of her role in society, "Myself," said Rachel, laughing. "Ha! Who am I, Mrs. Nelson?  Those who survive in Richmond reinvent themselves as circumstances dictate" (Westrick 107).

Author Of . . .: Dahl, Nesbit Inspire 'Art of Flying' Author Judy Hoffman

Author Of . . .: Dahl, Nesbit Inspire 'Art of Flying' Author Judy Hoffman | Fun Fiction Fridays | Scoop.it

Chicago-area author Judy Hoffman's new contemporary fantasy, The Art of Flying may be her debut, but her writing style makes it clear she's no novice.
A fun and engaging middle-grade novel, The Art of Flying features 11-year-old Fortuna Dalliance, who is typically a down-to-earth kind of kid. When her eclectic neighbors turn out to be witches, and they desperately need Fortuna's help, she's ready for adventure. The Baldwin sisters have gotten themselves into a pickle by turning three birds – an owl and two sparrows – into a bullying man and two boys. And they want Fortuna to talk some sense into one of them, Martin, to let the witches turn him back into a bird.
Fortuna isn't so sure she believes in magic. But once she gets to know Martin, she's certain she doesn't want to lose his friendship. The pressure is on, since the witchy Baldwin sisters face stiff penalties for their magic if they don't get those humans turned back into their feathery old selves within five days.

Crone LMC's insight:

This book is perfect for you, if you love being outside or have ever dreamed of flying.

Matt Blackstone: Sorry You're Lost

Matt Blackstone: Sorry You're Lost | Fun Fiction Fridays | Scoop.it

Denny "Donuts" Murphy, who yuks it up as class clown to mask his sadness since his mom died. But standing up to school bullies and scheming to land an actual (live human female) date to the 7th grade dance aren't (entirely) laughing matters. It’s time to stop playing the fool, and find out what more Donuts is made of.

Crone LMC's insight:

About the author-

For as long as I can remember, I liked writing stories. In elementary school, they were about tooth fairies and snap bracelets and wrestling buddies. And about how I loved to steal rocks from the neighbor’s front yard and bash them with a hammer to see the crystals inside, which I thought were real crystals and worth bajillions of dollars, so I couldn’t wait to sell them and buy a baseball stadium and a pool and, because I’d be a wise, responsible bijillionaire, I’d invest in baseball cards. Ken Griffey Jr. baseball cards.
Well, Ken Griffey Jr.’s cards are now worth a few bucks. And those rocks, the ones I stole, the ones with the crystals inside . . . they’re just rocks. So I’m sorta glad those stories didn’t come true, because, honestly, it would suck to lose a bajillion dollars. After not becoming a bajillionaire and losing it all, I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and taught high school English in Baltimore, New York City, and now on Long Island.

This Matt Blackstone's second novel.
