X-E1 vs. X-E2... since you asked

X-E1 vs. X-E2... since you asked | Fujifilm X-Series | Scoop.it
Yeah, this is a gear post. Some folks have asked me recently about the Fujifilm X-E1 vs. the X-E2, and so here’s my way of responding. I was going to just move past talking about the gear for awhile since it is only contributing to an unhealthy fixation on the parts of photography that don’t matter all that much, but inquiring minds want to know, and who am I if not a soulless shill desperate for an audience?

CES 2014 | New Grips - Fuji X-Series | Chris Dodkin

CES 2014 | New Grips - Fuji X-Series | Chris Dodkin | Fujifilm X-Series | Scoop.it

I got a chance to see and try the new Fuji grips this morning - for the X-E1/2 and the X-Pro1. Both grips remind me of RRS equipment – they are very light weight but strong, and are well made – Boxes say made in China on them. Both grips attach using an allen key and screw – so they are not something you’d be taking on and off frequently. They felt good on camera – less obtrusive than the current grips – at least to me......

Fujinon 23mm f/1.4 | Neill Soden

Fujinon 23mm f/1.4 | Neill Soden | Fujifilm X-Series | Scoop.it

The 23mm is a really good lens, the build and image quality is outstanding. I would say that if you have the X100 or X100S in addition to another Fuji, you don't really need this lens, and the price difference is small. That said, that beautiful f/1.4 can be really handy at times. The aperture ring is much better than on the 35mm. It feels better, more expensive and it is a lot harder to accidently bump. The manual focus is nice, you have to pull the focus ring back to enable it and it gives you all the focus scale you need. The only thing is that the camera (X-E2) stays in manual focus while the ring is pulled back, and it caught me out once or twice.  It is heavier than the 35mm and a bit bulkier. I could not find any faults with the images I got out of this lens. X-E2 review coming soon......

Highs and Lows of Using Fuji X-Pro Camera | Jeff Sinclair

Highs and Lows of Using Fuji X-Pro Camera | Jeff Sinclair | Fujifilm X-Series | Scoop.it

In my post on Emotional Portraits I mentioned that I used a Fujifilm X-Pro1 camera to take the photos at a family gathering. In this post I go further by explaining why I like this camera and why it also drives me crazy. This is a "gear" rather than technique review so skip if you are more interested in the ends rather than the means. The choice of camera for the family event was dictated by considerations for the people (i wanted a discrete camera with a fast lens) and considerations for the output ( I wanted good skin tones and low noise images). The XPro could delivers on both these points. If I had added another technical consideration - fast focusing in low light - it would have been a different story. Let's discuss these points in some detail.....

Back to Mauritania, with a Fuji x100s | Mitchell Kanashkevich

Back to Mauritania, with a Fuji x100s | Mitchell Kanashkevich | Fujifilm X-Series | Scoop.it

It didn’t take long for me to be back to this fascinating country. It’s winter here and, everything looks much more lively. I talked about how much I loved the Fuji x100s in Istanbul and I was serious, so, I took it with me to Mauritania. This’ll be a very quick post, since, so far I’ve only had a total of 2 days of actual shooting anywhere. We’re off for a fairly big trip into the desert tomorrow though. I’m in Mauritania because I really loved being here the first time and, it was damn hot then. 44C during the day and not much colder at night. I felt that there was still much more to explore and, I particularly wanted to photograph the nomads here. Mauritania is one of a few countries in the world where one can still encounter  fairly traditional nomadic communities, which haven’t been marginalised and made to settle because of modernisation.....

Winter time is here... but where is the snow? Usually we have snow where I live, at least some snow if not perfect skiing conditions. I'm longing to use my 14mm (21mm FF) wide angle lens and take some winter pictures. This is all I got for now.. no snow..

Fuji VS Canon | Leigh Miller

Fuji VS Canon | Leigh Miller | Fujifilm X-Series | Scoop.it
I do social media styled portraits for my friends every year. 2013 was the first time in close to 5 years that I haven't done the images with a DSLR or Medium Format camera. These two samples were made with a Fuji X-Pro1 at ISO 1600 and Canon EOS 5D Mark II at ISO 1250 respectively. Can you tell which is which without looking at the EXIF info at normal web viewing distance?
