This is Part 3 of the very popular “Leica on a Budget” series. We are testing the two latest contenders the Sony NEX-7 and the Fuji X-Pro1 with various M mount lenses. We will see if they have the quality and usability to be called “Leica on a Budget”. Which Camera will reign supreme? The Sony NEX-7 or the Fuji X-Pro1? Delete the scoop?

Fujifilm has officially unveiled its promised adapter to allow the use of Leica M-mount lenses on the X-Pro1. Unlike third-party adapters, but in a similar manner to the Ricoh GXR Mount A12, it's capable of storing up to six user-created lens profiles to correct distortion, vignetting and corner colour shading, which can be recalled by pressing a Function button on the side of the adapter. The camera can show framelines in its unique hybrid viewfinder for 21mm, 24mm, 28mm, and 35mm lenses (though not, oddly, for 50mm). For other focal lengths the camera's electronic viewfinder or rear screen will show a preview with 100% coverage of the field of view. To make full use of the adapter, a firmware update for the X-Pro1 (version 1.10) will be made available in June 2012.

This list of compatible lenses actually confirmed by Fujifilm is provided for your reference. Since the lens may be deteriorated due to individual difference or aging, or its form may have been changed due to damage, usability of all lenses of the same type is not guaranteed. Please make your own judgments when actually attaching the M Mount lens. Delete the scoop?

My Kipon Canon EF to Fuji XF adapter just arrived and I wanted to give it a quick try during lunch break. It just started raining a bit when I got out but I still managed to get a few shots. I used the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 set to f/2.2 for the first try. The size and weight of this lens seems to be best suited for my use with the Fuji. I might go up to f/2.8 next time to get a bit more dof as this combo gives me an equivalent field of view of 130mm in 35mm terms. Delete the scoop?

At this moment in time the only adapters that I know of are made by Kipon. I got mine via ebay. I have one already for Nikon mount lenses, which was excellent and this one for m-mount lenses is also very good quality. The lenses fits well with no movement and likewise the adapter slots nicely onto the camera and the whole thing feels very secure. Also like my Nikon adapter, infinity is infinity. This is very useful, as it allows for accurate zone focusing using the hyperfocal distance with the depth of field markings on the lens. On several occasions yesterday I just set the lens at infinity, confident that what I was photographing would be in focus. Delete the scoop?
