First date with the Fuji X-Pro1 | Pete Bridgwood

First date with the Fuji X-Pro1 | Pete Bridgwood | Fuji X-Pro1 | Scoop.it

My first serious camera was a Russian made Zenith EM in the late 1970′s. It was a joy to use, completely manual in operation, delightfully tactile and it did what it said on the tin. Now, over 30 years later, using high-end Fuji Compact System Cameras (CSCs) has re-ignited a passion. Over the last 2 years, when not shooting fine-art landscapes I’ve enjoyed the occasional dalliance with street photography using the Fuji X100. This is a wonderful camera to use, a superb ‘carry around’, and the fixed focal length lens is ideally suited to street photography. Far from feeling restricted by having a fixed focal length lens, it is unexpectedly liberating to be forced into using a set focal length. For an old-hand like me who spent years wet-processing and working exclusively in black & white, the X100 is an epiphany. How refreshing to use a camera with manual selection of shutter speed and aperture using traditional dials, rather than having to suffer the modern distraction of interfacing with electronics. Of course, under the bonnet, there are all the advantages of modern electronics and digital alchemy; it’s just nicely hidden for most of the time. Couple this fantastic experience of image gathering with state of the art creative black & white processing algorithms found in Nik’s Silver Efex Pro, and you have a winner. Miles of enjoyment walking the streets, black & white creative heaven. Despite the life-changing qualities of the X100 for street-photography (it’s quite possibly still the finest street-photography camera available bar none), for other genres there are obvious advantages in having interchangeable lenses. When I first held a Fuji X-Pro1 I was smitten. This was a camera that surpassed the already amazing X100 in specification, with the important addition of interchangeable lenses. The X-Pro1 has an improved APS-C sized X-Trans sensor that mimics the structure of silver halide film and lacks an anti-alias filter to provide the sharpest possible results. Fuji have kept the hybrid viewfinder that allows switching between the more traditional optical or electronic function, similar to that found on the X100....

Fujifilm X100s and Fujifilm X20 Specs | Leigh Diprose

Fujifilm X100s and Fujifilm X20 Specs | Leigh Diprose | Fuji X-Pro1 | Scoop.it

Two years ago, FUJIFILM launched the prestigious X100 with a FUJINON 23mm f/2 fixed prime lens and superb image quality, in a beautifully designed compact camera body. Its unique style and international acclaim has carved out a niche for a new genre of Premium Compact Camera, designed in pursuit of optimum operability. Today, FUJIFILM is proud to announce the launch of the FUJIFILM X100S, the successor to the FUJIFILM X100, inheriting its elegant design and high-performance lens, whilst evolving further to meet customers’ demands with the introduction of a higher-definition Hybrid Viewfinder and a new sensor and processor. The X100S has the ability to capture high resolution images, comparable to those taken on full-frame sensors. This is down to a combination of its newly-developed 16.3 megapixel APS-C X-Trans CMOS II sensor and EXR Processor II, which together increase resolution by approx. 25% and reduce noise by more than 30%. Clear images with minimal graininess, even at high ISO settings, can also be produced, thanks to the removal of the optical low pass filter and the introduction of a more powerful processor. The newly-developed X-Trans CMOS II sensor has built-in Phase Detection pixels which provide the X100S with the world’s fastest AF in as little as 0.08 seconds. Additionally, the EXR Processor II offers very speedy response times with a start-up time of approx. 0.5 seconds, and a shooting interval of 0.5 seconds. Plus with its shutter time lag of only 0.01 seconds, it allows you to react quickly and capture each precise moment you want to with no missed photo opportunities. Also new to the FUJIFILM X100S is the world’s first “Digital Split Image” feature, which displays dual images on the left and right to be lined up for manual focusing. This enables accurate focusing especially when working with an open aperture or macro shooting. What’s more there is a handy Focus Peak Highlight function, which shows you precisely which area of your composition is in focus. Depending on the subject and scene, users can switch between two viewfinder options: optical or electronic. The Optical Viewfinder (OVF) is useful when users want to see their subject in the same bright clarity that they see with the naked eye, or when time lag is an issue. The high resolution 2.36 million dot electronic viewfinder (EVF) is useful when you want to be able to visually check focus, exposure, white balance and depth of field whilst composing the shot.

Main Features:
(1) Sensor performance comparable to full-frame output

(2) The World’s fastest Auto Focus and High-speed EXR Processing

(3) Enhanced manual focus performance with the world’s first ‘Digital Split Image’ display

Fujifilm promises performance boost with X-Pro1 firmware v2.00 | Digital Photography Review

Fujifilm promises performance boost with X-Pro1 firmware v2.00 | Digital Photography Review | Fuji X-Pro1 | Scoop.it

Fujifilm is pleased to announce the release later this month of new firmware for the Fujifilm X-Pro1, designed to improve performance and enhance the users’ photographic experience. Since the launch of the X-Pro1 in early 2012, Fujifilm has received customer feedback on the camera’s performance and is addressing the issues raised by launching a firmware upgrade. On the installation of the new firmware, consumers will see a significant improvement in speed of Auto Focus, improved manual focus and processing/ writing speeds.

Improvements made after firmware update:

1. Improved performance of auto focus*1
Focussing in challenging lighting conditions, where light is low or bright, will now be much faster in Auto Focus mode. The focusing distance has also been improved, allowing you to get closer to the subject and capture a great shot without switching to macro mode.

2. Manual Focus improved performance
• Improved operability
The speed of the image coming into focus when turning the focus ring has been vastly improved. When adjusting the focus ring using the electronic viewfinder or the LCD panel on the back of the camera it is now much easier to focus, always displaying the image closer to full aperture with minimum depth of field.
• New addition of 3x magnification for checking focus
The 10x magnifications / focus check feature on the X-Pro1 has been well received and in this firmware update an additional 3x option is now available. It is also now possible to find the optimum focus point whilst viewing the entire screen.

3. Improved writing speed/ processing speed.
• Improved wirting speed to memory card
At maximum speed the X-Pro1 can now write to memory card twice as fast as before. *2
• Improved speed for playback after shooting
Image playback now occurs less than one second after pressing the image playback button. On some occasions previously, for example when using continuous shooting, you had to wait until the images had been processed before they were shown on screen.

4. Other additional functions:
Auto (6400) has been added to the ISO setting. This increased ISO not only speeds up the shutter speed, but also stabilises the image and mitigates blurring of the subject.

*1: The effect will differ according to the lens attached.
*2: the effect will differ according to the card type and image compression.

Launch date of the dedicated firmware: September 18th, 2012 6:00a.m. (GMT)

Tell you what I find most amazing is Fuji's absolute indifference to providing a proper English translation for their announcements. Quite remarkable considering what they have at stake. And I cannot help but wonder if it is not somehow indicative of their culture and attitude in general - we'll do it our way and you deal with it.
