A little gear-talk

A little gear-talk | Fuji X | almaphotografica | Scoop.it
As I'm having conversations about gear all the time I think it's time to
talk a little bit about what I use for my work. First of all: What is that
work? Many of you will mostly know my darker Fine Art work (composings and
such), but that's not my full body of work, it's just the part that I like
to display on my Fine Art Facebook site. Other than this I also do weddings
and portraits. So my gear has to deliver on many fronts. Because I'm always
thirsty to find out what fits best for me, I've used a few systems in the
past. Canon full-frame with its glorious L lenses (yea, they are indeed as
glorious as you have heard before), Nikon full-frame (that was my shortest
brand-journey) and Sony full-frame (A7 series). I mention that for two
reasons.

First I think that my experience with different systems lead to a
relatively sophisticated opinion of the strengths and weaknesses. And
second I'd like to point out that – although being an official Fujifilm
photographer by now – I feel in no way obligated to advertise their
products. They approached me after seeing that I use their gear, not the
other way around. Ok, ok, I'll go ahead.

As many others I started with the most common brand – Canon. Their cameras
are very solid and their most expensive contenders have no real technical
weaknesses in my opinion (their sensors don't match either Sony or Nikon
though). Nikon? Maybe a tad quicker AF, but an inferiour lens lineup – for
me at least.

I skip ahead. My first step into mirrorless was the Sony A7, which
impressed me quite a bit. Wedding was no concern at that time, so I bought
some beautiful crafted manual glass. What a damn pleasure. You never tried
manual focus lenses made of metal and glass with buttery smooth focus
mechanics? You missed something. I promise.

Why did I leave Sony? The Fuji X-T1 was very appealing to me. Not only was
it the same (very small and lightweight) size of the Sony A7. It had also
an incredible lens lineup (all lenses by Fuji I've owned are of phenomenal
optical and mechanical quality – similar to Canon's luxury line), a better
built body than Sony - bigger viewfinder, more rubber and a better grip –
and as someone who enjoys aesthetics the beautiful design was very
tempting.

Also it was satisfying many needs at once: Good optical quality (RAWs of
some of its contenders still look superior though), small size, little
weight, fantastic ergonomics, quick enough AF, awesome lenses and by now
one of the biggest pros for me: In electronic mode is it completely silent.
No noise while pressing the shutter. You can imagine how useful that is for
wedding photography where I love to stay unobstrusive?

I don't use multiple of their bodies because I'm a do-gooder but because
they match up with my style of work. My Fine Art stuff, which is very
composing-heavy, requires a fluid workflow and sharp images with a solid
dynamic range (needed for bringing back detail to dark and bright areas). I
guess you could say that all of the above mentioned cameras can do that.
And I wouldn't dissent. But as my demands exceed just good image quality,
I've decided to go the Fuji-route. Of course it's very subjective. I don't
like to be the click-click-boom shooter. I don't like to use flashes and I
hate to disturb when I do documentary work. I use my X-T1s, the Fujinon
23mm, 35mm and 56mm for all my work. As it's an APS-C sensor that
translates to 35mm, 52mm and 85mm full-frame lenses. These are common focal
lenses you can buy for any brand.

X-T1 / backside and dials

ONA Bowery Smoke

For a long time now I've been one of those who praised the new mirrorless
trend and I still do. You can see the final image in the viewfinder, see in
the dark and go VERY light and stealthy. The ONA bag on the pictures is
nice to carry around small cameras. Very stylish and practical. Beautifully
crafted. I'm just into high-quality leather equipment. For my wedding work
I use a common strap and a Spider Holster, for those who are looking for
inspiration on how to handle two cameras at once. This very moment, I'm
thinking about buying an ONA Lima or Presidio strap – I think just because
they look so damn cool.

And last but not least the things that also find their way into my bag from
time to time:

- Velbon Tripod
- Velbon Monopod (I just like the brand - but any other brand will do just
as fine)
- ND-Filter (sometimes useful for 1.2 and 1.4 lenses and to use a flash
outdoor)
- lots of memory (UHS-I SD Cards)
- lots of spare batteries (mirrorless cameras drain them like hell -
definitely a downside)
- standard cheap reflector (usually used for portraits)
- Yongnuo Flash (seldom used, as I love available light)

Thanks for taking time.

Victor

During the last Pitti Uomo I was contacted by the fashion blogger Sani Starr who needed to take pictures for his blog and website during the famous Florence’s fair. In the two days scheduled for the photos at Pitti Uomo’s fair, Sani wore two different outfits that were perfectly matching with the theme “Pitticolor” of this edition. As for the photos previously proposed, these images were taken trying the Fuji X-T1 and the 35mm f/1.4, used almost always as open as possible.
