This is a short review/comparison of the two tele-zooms on offer from fuji at the moment, the more expensive and better built XF 55-200mm F3.5-4.8 OIS -vs- the cheaper XC 50-230mm F4.5-6.7 OIS. Not all of the images here have been post processed so this isn't a review for people looking for light falloff and all that stuff.

New lens roadmap: XC 50-230 f/4.5-6.7 added! | Fuji Rumors | Fuji x-pro 1 | Scoop.it

It seems that once more our sources were right, when they said that a cheaper lens, similar to the 55-200 would be released soon. Fuji updated its lens roadmap and here it is: the XC 50-230 f/4.5-6.7. They also added the XC 16-50 to the roadmap.

I quit using zoom lenses for my everyday work a few years back. The specs and review sites seem to agree that image quality from zoom lenses has caught up to high quality primes now. Personally I'm still not convinced but they are close IMHO. The last zoom lens I owned was the venerable Canon EF 70-200L F/2.8. When you need variable distances in the same shoot and don't want to change lenses or body combinations, that's the lens you want. Fuji introduced a handful of zooms (premium & enthusiast) over the last year or two and I've got my hands on the XC 50-230mm variant. I've paired it up with the new X-E2 body and took it to the zoo for an afternoon photo-walk. Unless you have lot's of cash to fund safaris and adventure trips to exotic locations, the zoo is the only place to get close to magnificent animals you might never otherwise come across....the morality of keeping an animal caged for our amusement aside of course. My favorite way to shoot at the zoo is to zoom as close to the animals as possible to eliminate the background and surrounding cage/fence/etc. This isolates the subject and fills the frame and allows the viewer to submerge in the image without distractions......

Fuji XF Lenses

Fuji XF Lenses | Fuji x-pro 1 | Scoop.it
But what I really needed was an extra lens or two. Fuji are trying very hard to push their X range of CSC cameras. I originally bought my X-M1 and 16-50mm kit lens on a special offer – they threw in a zoom lens (XC 50-230mm) for free. And their promotions keep on coming. Some of the deals seem crazy. But Fuji’s X range is one of the newer CSC options, and I guess they want people to buy into the system. Sell a camera, you’ve got a customer for the life of the camera. Sell them the lenses, you’ve got them for life.

FUJI X-T1Continuing Challenge

FUJI X-T1Continuing Challenge | Fuji x-pro 1 | Scoop.it

One of the most interesting features of the Fuji X-T1 Graphite edition, is it’s fully electronic shutter. What that means in simple terms is that the you can set the camera so that the mechanical shutter doesn’t get used at all. If you couple this feature while turning the camera into silent mode, you will now have a stealth camera. Now if you know anyone that works in the film industry you know that they generally will buy the best camera gear that they can, and then buy a sound blimp, which is this massive device, that absorbs all of the sounds generated by the camera. The Fuji X-T1 virtually eliminates the need for a sound blimp, because of its excellent low light capabilities, and its ability to shoot completely silent.

Fujinon XC 50-230mm f/4.5-6.7 OIS

Fujinon XC 50-230mm f/4.5-6.7 OIS | Fuji x-pro 1 | Scoop.it

Earlier this week, we reviewed the Fujinon XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS. However, there is also a more affordable option for those on a budget - the Fujinon XC 50-230mm f/4.5-6.7 OIS. It is often sold as part for double lens kits but it is also available separately for less than 400EUR/US$. Compared to its bigger brother you obviously loose about one f-stop in max. speed but interestingly you also get a little extra zoom range on top. In full format terms, it provides a focal length range equivalent to "76-350mm" and as of the time of this review, "350mm" is as long as it gets in Fuji land.

Ok so lets get this out of the way first, its plastic all around. Lens mount, body, focusing ring are all plastic. The zoom ring does have a nice feeling rubberized coating on it which makes it comfortable to use and its just big enough for your fingers to fit around. The plastic that Fuji used on this lens is pretty high quality though, it doesn’t scream budget and I think it looks quite good. Below are the pictures of the lens attached to my Fuji X-Pro1 at both 50 and 230mm ends. One of the biggest advantages of this lens over its big brother (50-200mm) is the weight savings. It is dramatic how much less this lens weights as compared to the all metal construction of the afore mentioned offering from Fuji. For me this was a big selling point as most of my photography is done on trips, hikes and generally hauling a backpack along.........

Summary

If its £199 get the XC, its really great and nice and small, its not as good as the XF in terms of build and speed but its really only marginally different, however if it were a case between the two I would have the 55-200 if the XC wasn't so cheap. So overall see what you've got in your wallet, if you can afford the XF buy that but if you can fins a deal on the XC you won't be disappointed with it, don't feel like you are missing out on getting the cheaper lens it is still and awesome piece of kit. I hope thats helpful to someone out there, I've now gone on to sell my XF and stick with the cheaper one, I'm also off to Iceland next week so I'm really gonna try it out then.....

The Fuji XT-1 and XC 50-230 meet Australian Wildlife | Caveira Photography | Fuji x-pro 1 | Scoop.it

Most of us are guilty of spending our dollars on getting that 'perfect lens' or piece of gear that will 'make my photos so much better'. It's bred into us via the internet and marketing and I am certainly guilty of such things considering photography isn't my bread and butter, yet I own a pretty nice but simple Canon rig, and my Fuji rig is growing steadily. After recently adding more Fuji gear to my arsenal (XT-1 & XF56 1.2) I decided to check out a 'cheap' Fuji zoom lens for testing my skills in areas I've not worked much in before - wildlife photography. For $240 AUD (~$190 USD) the XC 50-230mm f4.5-6.7 is a relatively compact and very quiet zoom lens covering a 76-350mm focal length and it also has Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). As I've said to my best mate before and fellow camera and Transformer's enthusiast, 'I'm just like Optimus in that I'm a Prime kinda guy', so this is the first zoom lens I've ever purchased, which opens up a lot of opportunities and a different way of shooting compared to what I'm used to. Regardless, I had a lot of fun with it and was pleasantly impressed with the results......

About Photography: Three days in Pennsylvania with fog, mist, rain, and the Fuji X-T1

About Photography: Three days in Pennsylvania with fog, mist, rain, and the Fuji X-T1 | Fuji x-pro 1 | Scoop.it
I headed out to Pennsylvania, not far from the Delaware Water Gap, to spend the Christmas holiday. I  went out several days early intending to photograph the local forest areas for my art portfolio. Originally I had planned on bringing two camera systems with me, the Fuji and Leica M 240, but last minute space limitations made me pare down to just the Fuji. So in one bag I tucked away the X-T1 with 18-135mm zoom as my main lens to cover just about everything. In addition I carried the 55-200mm zoom (never used it), two fast lenses (the 35mm and 56mm f/1.4), the 14mm as my small super-wide, and the Zeiss Touit 50mm macro for close-ups. In addition I had a set of ND filters for time-lapse work, and a small tripod, the Sirui T-025X I reviewed previously on this blog as the perfect compact accompaniment to a Fuji-X system.
