MAIB FTN Press-Review's insight:

2 PhD Scholarships in Terpenoid production in hairy root lines and shoot culturesDepartment of Plant and Environmental Sciences
Faculty of Science University of Copenhagen Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering two PhD Scholarships in Terpenoid production in hairy root lines and shoot cultures, commencing 1 August 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter.

This is an opening for two fully funded PhD Scholarships (Early Stage Researcher) under an EU FP7 Marie Curie Initial Training Network - European Industrial Doctorate (EID), entitled Plant Tissue Cultures as New Production Platforms for Terpenoid Based Anti-Cancer Drugs, DrugTissueCult (www.drugtissuecult.eu).

Project description
Plants produce a vast diversity of specialized and bioactive compounds. For thousands of years, mankind has used extracts from plants containing bioactive compounds as part of traditional herbal medicines. More recently anticancer properties of some bioactive compounds have been discovered and are now leads for new pharmaceutical drugs to combat cancers. In DrugTissueCult we focus on two bioactive compounds Thapsigargin and Withaferin A with anticancer properties. Both are of a pharmaceutical and economical value, but are difficult to obtain from their native source and very expensive to make through chemical synthesis. Thapsigargin, is a sesquiterpenoid found in Thapsia garganica plants and Withaferin A, is a triterpenoid found in Withania somnifera plants. The aim of DrugTissueCult is to generate plant tissue culture lines that produce very high amounts of Thapsigargin or Withaferin A. Investigation of how Thapsigargin and Withaferin A are biosynthesized and identification of the genes behind, will lead to an overall understanding of terpenoid biosynthesis in plants. This will also facilitate the creation of tissue culture lines where selected genes are up-regulated using genetic engineering to further enhance the production of Thapsigargin and Withaferin A.

The objectives of these PhD projects are to establish plant tissue cultures of Thapsia and Withania, study the production of terpenoids in these cultures, and use this material to initiate elucidation the biosynthetic pathways of the studied terpenoids, but also to study the regulations of terpenoids in the tissue cultures in order to enhance the production output. Other research questions may be explored depending on the development of the project and the PhD candidate background and interests.

The project is funded by EU FP7 and will be carried as private-public collaboration between the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, Section for Plant Biochemistry and the Alkion Biopharm, in Paris with at least 50% of the time (18 month) spent at the company. The project will be carried out in two highly competitive, stimulating and international research environments with English being the working language.

Principal supervisors are Associate Professor, Henrik Toft Simonsen, Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, hts@plen.ku.dk, Direct Phone: +45 353 31131 and Professor, Søren Bak, Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, bak@plen.ku.dk, Direct Phone: +45 353 33346. News from Committee on Sustainability Assessment COSA | MAIB FTN Community Press Review 2014 | Scoop.it
MAIB FTN Press-Review's insight:

Dear FTN,

Recently I travelled to NYC for the Rainforest Alliance Annual Gala (thanks Lavazza) honoring the valuable work of luminaries such as Nell Newman (of Newman’s Own) but for me the highlight was an inspiring moment, from the person receiving a lifetime achievement award: Unilever’s Paul Polman, one of my favorite CEOs.
My admiration grew that evening because instead of talking about his achievements or his firm, he focused instead on the work that we all must do together. For him it is a moral responsibility to make a difference for the less fortunate. I was speaking with him briefly later in the evening, saying that I was moved by his words and work and, as we shook hands, he warmly but quite seriously looked me in the eye and said: “remember, it (sustainability) is the work of all of us”. Indeed, so it is.

His sincere and responsible public stand is a vivid reminder that ethical choices are within our power if we take seriously the rare gift and opportunity that we each have to make a substantial difference for someone every day. Here below are a few higlights of what COSA and some partners are doing now.

With warm regards,

Daniele Giovannucci
President, COSA

Family Farming Expo: a learning experience for family farmers and for FAO

Family Farming Expo: a learning experience for family farmers and for FAO | MAIB FTN Community Press Review 2014 | Scoop.it
MAIB FTN Press-Review's insight:

Farmer, Elisabetta Monti on farming in Trentino and the role of local committees in the promotion of the family and small-scale farming model in Italy.

Over the next three weeks FAO is hosting a small family farmers' market in the atrium. Products for sale include pulses, cereals, honey, biscuits, jams, olive oil, pickled fish, vegetable pâtés, dried fruits and many more. The families and cooperatives involved come from all over Italy and have different stories to tell.

The market is a great opportunity for FAO to learn more about local Italian small-scale and family farming directly from the farmers themselves and for the farmers from all over Italy to have valuable contact with FAO technical departments and each other.

One of the farmers here last week, Elisabetta Monti, told us about her family's farm, La Fonte Folgaria in Trentino. This self-sufficient traditional organic farm produces various products including infusions, dried fruits and vegetables, herbal and aromatic salts, herbal remedies (typical flowers/herbs from the Trentino region) as well as milk, eggs, wool and meat.

Climate Engineering Conference 2014 18-21 August, Berlin, Germany

Climate engineering is rapidly becoming a contentious issue within political, scientific, and cultural discussions of climate change, in part due to a perceived lack of progress on crucial emission reductions. By organizing a large conference in August 2014, we strive to engage in critical global discussions by bringing together the research, policy, and civic communities to discuss the highly complex and interlinked ethical, social and technical issues that come into focus when discussing climate engineering. Registration is open till 7 July 2014.

United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to food. Olivier De Schutter
MAIB FTN Press-Review's insight:

Final diagnosis from Special Rapporteur: how to mend broken food systems - Olivier De Schutter | United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food |

In his final report to the UN Human Rights Council after a six-year term as Special Rapporteur, Olivier De Schutter today called for the world’s food systems to be radically and democratically redesigned.

“Objectives such as supplying diverse, culturally-acceptable foods to communities, supporting smallholders, sustaining soil and water resources, and raising food security within particularly vulnerable areas, must not be crowded out by the one-dimensional quest to produce more food,” he urged.

At the local level, the Special Rapporteur called on regions to build their food security around smallholder-led, poverty-reducing forms of agriculture, while urging cities to take food security into their own hands by identifying pressure points and developing a variety of channels to procure their food – not least by reconnecting with local food producers.

This must be complemented by democratically-designed right to food strategies at the national level. An enabling international environment is also essential, the Special Rapporteur stated, recalling the promising efforts of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) to foster inclusive decision-making, and urging other global governance bodies to follow suit.

The Special Rapporteur added: “Attempts by developing countries to improve their food security will only be successful if there are parallel reforms in the global north. Wealthy countries must restrain their expanding claims on global farmland by reining in the demand for animal feed and agrofuels, and by reducing food waste.”

The report included a summary of recommendations issued over the course of his mandate as Special Rapporteur (2008-2014), covering food price volatility, trade and investment in agriculture, regulating agribusiness, agrofuels, food aid and development cooperation, nutrition, social protection, women’s rights, Human Rights Impact Assessments, national strategies, agricultural workers, contract farming, small-holder farmers, agroecology, and the reinvestment in agriculture.
