Tests find trees tolerant to olive tree killer pathogen - BBC News | FTN press review | Scoop.it
Laboratory tests show some varieties of olive trees appear to be resistant to an invasive pathogen that poses a serious risk to Europe's olive industry.

Science & Environment #BBC News | Tests find trees tolerant to olive tree killer pathogen By Mark Kinver Environment reporter, BBC News | #Ciheam #[Alumni #FTN #IPM #Olive #XylellaFastidiosa |

Tolerance to olive tree killer Tests suggest some varieties of olive trees appear to be resistant to Xylella fastidiosa, an invasive pathogen posing a serious risk to Europe's olive industry. The study, carried out by Italian researchers and funded by the European Food Safety Agency (#EFSA), began in 2014 and consisted of two main types of experiments: artificial inoculation with needle and inoculation via insect vectors collected from the field. The tests were carried out on a variety of species, including a range of olive, grape, stone-fruit (almond and cherry), and oak varieties. "The key results are that, 12-14 months after artificial inoculation on different olive varieties, the team found that young plants typically grown in the region displayed symptoms of the dieback," said Giuseppe Stancanelli, head of the EFSA's Plant and Animal Health Unit. But he added: "What has also been shown is that some varieties have shown some tolerance. They grow in infected orchards but do not show strong symptoms, as seen in more susceptible varieties. They are still infected by the inoculation but this infection is much slower so it takes longer for the infection to spread, and the concentration of the bacterium in the plant is much lower." These results are important in terms of providing information for tree breeders. However, it is too early to say whether or not the olive yields from the varieties that have displayed tolerance to the infection are nonetheless reduced or adversely affected. Read more.

Ciheam-Bari FTN Press-Review's insight:

#ClimateIsWater looks to COP22

The #ClimateIsWater initiative clearly brought water to the climate community at COP21 in Paris. Water was discussed at greater depth and in greater detail than at any previous UN climate conference. Now, #ClimateIsWater, coordinated by the WWC, is inspiring the groundwork for COP22.

Gaining momentum from successful collaboration in the lead-up to COP21, cooperation between France, host of COP21, and Morocco, which will host COP22 is bourgeoning. As part of the push to place water at the heart of COP22, France, Morocco and the WWC are co-hosting the International Conference on Water and Climate. To be held in Rabat, Morocco, 11–12 July, we’re sure the conference will raise political awareness of the importance of water in tackling and adapting to climate change.

A ministerial roundtable will be organized to give African states an opportunity to share their perspectives on water and climate issues specific to the continent.

19th Organic World Congress - Call for Papers Now Open

The 19th Organic World Congress of IFOAM - Organics International, taking place from 09 - 11 November 2017 in India, now opens its Call for Papers.

Every three years sector stakeholders come together at the Organic World Congress (OWC), the world’s largest and most significant organic gathering, to discuss and deliberate the issues of the day.

The 19th OWC is structured in four conference tracks: Main Track, Farmers Track, Scientific Track, and Marketing Track.

The Main Track, composed of two parallel sessions, is a series of public discussions and debates by leaders from the organic movement on how we can best promote and implement the organic agenda.  The overarching theme is “Global Adoption of Organic Principles for Truly Sustainable Agriculture' and the audience is invited to contribute to strategic discussions with the panel experts.

The Farmers’ Track provides a forum to highlight farmers’ work in organic especially with regards to innovations used on their farms. Presentations will be on the topics of Seeds & Biodiversity, Soil Fertility & Health, Soil Life & Plant Health, and Ecological Farming Practices & Systems.

The Scientific Track is a platform where research results are presented and discussed in 20 sessions of 1.5 hours each. Papers must link to scientific disciplines such as soil, plant, animal, or economics. All papers should give at least an outline of how the research presented contributes to Organic 3.0 - The next phase of organic development.

The Marketing Track discusses innovative ideas for shortening value chains, for systems that build trust between actors, for promising marketing methods and for organic and fair trade alliance building. Papers are called for that deal with emerging trends in quality assurance, e.g. PGS (Participatory Guarantee Systems), CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), fair trade and other alternative and integrative systems.

More information on the OWC and and the Call for Papers.

Please note, the deadline for submissions is 30 September 2016.

There is no better event in the organic calendar to showcase your knowledge and expertise as well as actively contribute to strengthening the organic sector.

We look forward to greeting you in India.
