Ciheam-Bari FTN Press-Review's insight:

Unfinished Puzzle -- Cuban Agriculture:  The Challenges, Lessons & Opportunities
By May Ling Chan and Eduardo Francisco Freyre Roach

What can we learn from the Cuban experience of sustainable agriculture, agrarian reform, food security and food sovereignty?

The Unfinished Puzzle provides a rare view from inside Cuba of the tension between food sovereignty and the struggle for food security in the face of a 50-year U.S. embargo. The authors use statistical analysis, interviews and studies including trends in production, consumption and imports and exports from the years 1989 to 2011.

The Unfinished Puzzle refers to the challenge of overcoming the Cuban agricultural paradox. Despite great agroecological advances and with over 120,000 peasants using sustainable methods--and producing most of the food on the island--why does Cuba still import substantial amounts of Food? And why is the government releasing transgenic plants such as Bt corn? Why is agroecology considered an "alternative," and only supported under scenarios of economic scarcity? This book helps to address this unfinished puzzle.

Miguel A. Altieri, PhD, University of California at Berkeley
President, Latin American Scientific Society of Agroecology (SOCLA)

Why is the Cuban experience so unique in terms of sustainable agriculture, local development, agrarian reform, food security and food sovereignty? Is that experience replicable in other countries?

This book provides a rare view from inside Cuba of the tension between food sovereignty and the struggle for food security in the face of a 50-year U.S. embargo. The authors use statistical analysis, interviews and studies including trends in production, consumption and imports and exports from the years 1989 to 2011.

The Future of Sustainability Standard | An agenda for assessing and improving conservation impacts of sustainability standards in tropical agriculture | COSA

Ciheam-Bari FTN Press-Review's insight:

The Future of Sustainability Standards

Sustainability standards have seen rapid growth in tropical agricultural commodities such as cocoa, coffee, palm oil, soybeans, and tea. One recent scientific paper notes, perhaps not surprisingly, that the most popular sustainability standards are those that can relax their requirements and reduce their costs. But what is the effect of such popularity?

To explore what we can do to increase the environmental results of these sustainability standards, COSA's president Daniele Giovannucci joined Brian Milder and an esteemed group of researchers and scientists in compiling the "Agenda for assessing and improving conservation impacts of sustainability standards in tropical agriculture", recently published in the Conservation Biology journal.

Congratulations, People and Plant Winners | Canaan Fair Trade | Green America December 12th, 2014

Ciheam-Bari FTN Press-Review's insight:

---------------------------
Congratulations to the three winners of the Fall 2014 "Worker Empowerment" round of Green America's People & Planet Award.  Each award winner does amazing work to bring meaningful employment to worker cooperatives in struggling communities around the world:  Canaan Fair Trade helps Palestinian farmers gain access to world markets, Mata Traders supports artisan families in India struggling to compete with textile factories, and Ojoba Collective works directly with women's cooperatives in rural Ghana to produce bodycare products.

Each winner receives a $5,000 prize to support the green missions of their businesses.

Tracy Wulfers, co-founder of Ojoba, said it best:  "We are honored to win this award, not just because the prize money will help us purchase more solar cookers and rocket stoves to green our production facility, but because it signals a changing tide in consumer attitudes.  Americans are tired of reading about sweatshops, child labor, and the exploitation of workers, just like they are tired of reading about the exploitation of the earth. Fair Trade is a growing movement because people are realizing we can’t create a healthier planet without building communities of healthy, empowered people to do the work."

Vote for Canaan Fair Trade | Green Business People and Planet Award by Green America: Canaan Fair Trade

Canaan Fair Trade Madison, WI

When Canaan Fair Trade began, Palestinian farmers faced plummeting olive oil prices locally and no access to outside markets. They were unable to support their families and questioned whether they could stay in farming. Canaan linked struggling farmers with world markets in long-term relationships based on social responsibility and environmental sustainability. The farmers Canaan deals with are able to support their families, stay on their land, and earn their livelihood from the land. Canaan also secured markets for the products of artisan women producers, enabling women cooperatives to earn income off products they traditionally produced for their families.

As a fair trade company, Canaan built a processing plant in Palestine, and Canaan olive oil and foods are processed, packaged and finished in Palestine using their fair trade workers, thus sharing fair trade benefits with more Palestinians. Canaan's fair trade workers are paid well, involved in decision making, and motivated to think of their work as a learning process and be innovative in addressing the needs of their communities.

The Canaan initiative is centered on the land as a regenerative resource in the hands of small-scale farmers. Fair trade and organic farming builds off traditional Palestinian farming methods, and Canaan raises awareness among Palestinian farmers of the benefits of these practices on the environment. Canaan's education and training programs lead to organic and fair trade certification, and allow small farmers and women to receive a premium price for their products in global markets. Canaan reaffirms traditional farming practices that are sustainable, combined with proven techniques that maximize on farm resources, and invests in the future by planting trees and supporting wild cultivation.

By reinvigorating the farming sector in Palestine in a framework of social responsibility and environmental sustainability, Canaan has inspired other institutions and NGO's in Palestine to integrate the principles of fair trade and organic practices into their own initiatives. Recently, the ILO named the Canaan project and its PFTA farmers as a world model for rural transformation, so this initiative could eventually have a global impact.

The Canaan Fair Trade initiative not only secures Palestinian farmers' and women producers' livelihood, but also fosters independence by safeguarding food security for Palestinian communities. Canaan's success has led to shifting perceptions of Palestinians from victim or terrorist to artisan producer and trade partner. This cross cultural exchange has opened the global market to Palestine, empowering Canaan workers and the farmers they deal with, and has cultivated a climate of hope and promise in a marginalized community caught in the midst of conflict.
