Innovation Excellence | For Better Innovation, Fill The Gap

Innovation Excellence | For Better Innovation, Fill The Gap | Front End Innovation | Scoop.it
Paul Hobcraft wrote a nice blog about the genesis of an idea in his article entitled Making Innovation Practice Spread. In his article he talks about two schools of thought.
Rowan Norrie's insight:

By mimicking the jagged structure of a lightning bug’s “lantern” in a layer on top of existing LEDs, or light-emitting diodes, a team of researchers in Belgium, France, and Canada increased the amount of light from the semiconductor device by up to 55 percent.

Products cannot be developed in isolation from the market. However, market research is so often an afterthought, sometimes not undertaken till the prototype stage (if at all). Why Big Companies Can't Innovate

Why Big Companies Can't Innovate | Front End Innovation | Scoop.it
Sticking with known knowns can stifle good ideas.
Rowan Norrie's insight:

Big companies are measured on profitability. As a result, operational efficiency is high on the agenda. A start-up's success, on the other hand, is not gauged by earnings or quarterly reports; it's measured by how well it identifies a problem in the market and matches it to a solution.

Identifying an unmet need and then focusing on meeting that need for the customer is key to a successful innovation.

How to Create an Innovation Ecosystem

How to Create an Innovation Ecosystem | Front End Innovation | Scoop.it
The best ideas don't spring from individuals.

When we talk about innovation, we often focus on individuals. Take the endless fascination with Steve Jobs as an innovative leader, or our innate tendency to attribute a discovery to a single inventor. In business, we generally identify good innovators and nurture their ability to generate creative practical solutions to new problems. There is less focus on the kinds of structures that promote a culture of innovation.
