Why Europe should invest in imitation, not innovation

Why Europe should invest in imitation, not innovation | Front End Innovation | Scoop.it
In economic debates, it is about as close to a mantra as you can get: Innovation is good, and faster innovation is even better. You can never have too much of it. The World Bank, in a recent report, bemoaned what it called Europe’s “innovation deficit” and questioned whether Europe had “fundamental flaws in its economic environment”...
Rowan Norrie's insight:

How to Get Great Ideas from Your Team

How to Get Great Ideas from Your Team | Front End Innovation | Scoop.it

The thing about brainstorming, idea management and other business tools for collecting ideas is that they are artificial processes that attempt to induce creativity on groups and, as such, acknowledge a simple fact: the office is a terrible place for having and developing ideas!

Rowan Norrie's insight:

Some good ideas about how to get out a mental rut and gain new insights.

Marc Kneepkens's curator insight, May 14, 9:27 AM

Innovation and creativity is not a logical thing. Playing, doing irrelevant activities, getting out of the office, all contribute to release the 'illogical' stuff that is under the surface. This is an interesting article, especially when looking for a change.

The Secret Weapon of Intrapreneurial Innovators

The Secret Weapon of Intrapreneurial Innovators | Front End Innovation | Scoop.it
Last summer, Jennifer Sigler, the Chief Operating Officer at Global Giving, shared with me that her entire staff was reading the Lean Startup by Eric Ries. The idea that a senior manager of a non-profit would have all of her employees read a book about start-up strategy sounded unconventional and [...]
Rowan Norrie's insight:

This is a great article, which looks at good habits of successful entrepreneurs. Learning from failure, staying lean and developing  a Minimal Viable product that you can quickly take to market to get feedback and start revenue have all been mentioned before.

But it never occurred to be that having the group all speak a common language is a key factor. There are different ways this can be achieved - 1) lay out the ground rules and include a glossary of terms and what they mean 2) attend an innovation training event and agree what terminology you are going to use or 3) be part of an entrepreneurial movement like Entrepreneurial Spark to be imbued with innovation speak.

Innovation has become the buzzword of the decade in the worlds of business and education. Politicians on both sides of the aisle, Fortune 500 companies, universities, and local school systems all agree that it is the key to the future. Like Miss America contestants wanting world peace, the term “innovation” has become the canned response of executives, politicians, and educators to the question, “What do we need to be successful?”
