How to Get Great Ideas from Your Team

How to Get Great Ideas from Your Team | Front End Innovation | Scoop.it

The thing about brainstorming, idea management and other business tools for collecting ideas is that they are artificial processes that attempt to induce creativity on groups and, as such, acknowledge a simple fact: the office is a terrible place for having and developing ideas!

Rowan Norrie's insight:

Some good ideas about how to get out a mental rut and gain new insights.

Marc Kneepkens's curator insight, May 14, 2014 9:27 AM

Innovation and creativity is not a logical thing. Playing, doing irrelevant activities, getting out of the office, all contribute to release the 'illogical' stuff that is under the surface. This is an interesting article, especially when looking for a change.

The Anticonventional Thinking (ACT) Method (2.0)

The Anticonventional Thinking (ACT) Method (2.0) | Front End Innovation | Scoop.it

I introduced the anticonventional thinking (ACT) about a year ago and presented it at the European Conference of Creativity and Innovation (ECCI) in 2011. Since then, I have presented it in workshops and have faciltated ACTings (ACT sessions). In doing so, I have realised that the method could be improved. In particular, the method needed simplification and clarity. Hence, I have rewritten the ACT whitepaper. Below is a description of the method.

Rowan Norrie's insight:

As with all processes, creativity needs a structure to be effective. I really like Jeffrey's very practical approach to stretch thinking, coming up with 'sexy goals'.

I particularly like his ideas of WASNT sheets - What Are the Steps Needed To.. - for following up ideas.

A Wandering Mind Is Good For Creativity

A Wandering Mind Is Good For Creativity | Front End Innovation | Scoop.it
Researchers have been analyzing daydreaming, and they’ve found those stray thoughts to be remarkably common — and often quite useful.
Rowan Norrie's insight:

Something we all have experienced - that we often come up with a good idea or a solution when our mind is elsewhere and when we are least expecting it. Not research has shown that a wandering mind is indeed good for creativity.

However, we cannot rely on serendipity to result in a solution. I find that 'structured daydreaming' is a good method. First, be clear about the problem/issue that you are trying to solve; best to write it down in simple sentence. Next think of an associated topic and let your mind wander. If that doesn't work, then try an unrelated topic. And if all else fails, then sleep on it!

In this blog David shares his tips for how to get 'in the flow' with creativity. It centres around being mentally and physically in a good space, then being able to combat the fear of the unknown, of failing, of appearing foolish. Knowledge reduces fear, which in turn releases the creativity..

32 Innovations That Will Change Your Tomorrow

32 Innovations That Will Change Your Tomorrow | Front End Innovation | Scoop.it

An abridged guide to the many ways that your day is about to get better from sensors in teeth to underwear that analyses your movements.

Rowan Norrie's insight:

This list of innovations give a glimpse of a future that is within reach. Use it to trigger new ideas for your products, either to extend a current applicatio. For example Innovation 1 - Electric Clothes. Could these be used to power your product? How might they be combined?

Alternatively, you can use it to find a whole new way to solve a problem. For example Innovation 27 - A New Firefighter - is using an electric field to destabilise the flame’s underlying structure rather than blanketing the fire to smother it. How might an electric field be applied in another situation to alter the structure?

Is Creativity the New Business Edge?

Is Creativity the New Business Edge? | Front End Innovation | Scoop.it
The business world is very rational. Operational excellence, financial mastery and technology savviness have become pre-requisite not to stand out as a winner but to be allowed to compete.

Via Peter Verschuere
Rowan Norrie's insight:

In this fast-moving environment, it is not enough to see an oppportunity. You need to come up with an innovative solution, and you need to develop and launch it faster than all your competitors.

Companies rarely excel at both tasks. First, rather than storming ahead with your first concept, you need to take time to consider if it is really the best solution or is there some way that you can extend the innovation to make it more valuable to the customer and stay ahead of the competition. This is where the creativity part comes in. And then you need to have excellent processes in place to fast track the project to completion.

Introducing New Ideas Using Analogies

Introducing New Ideas Using Analogies | Front End Innovation | Scoop.it
Analogies can help people make sense of technological change and other innovations. Using them effectively relies on recognizing both their benefits and pitfalls.
Rowan Norrie's insight:

Analogies are a great way to ease users into a new unfamiliar technology, as this article indicates.

But analogies are also a useful tool for creativity. It is easy to get blinkered when thinking about your industry, but thinking about how other industries work can be a useful exercise to jog us away from the familiar. When thinking about managing waiting lists in hospitals, how do banks or airlines manage their customer processes? Looking to re-design seating for tractors (a rather unusual project I was once involved with), then how does the automobile or airline business design comfortable seating?
