World Book Night USA - April 23, 2012

April 23, 2012 was the first year of World Book Night in the USA. WBN is an annual celebration of reading and literature in which volunteers across the country sign up to be Volunteer Givers. The date was chosen for a few reasons: it is the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)’s World Book Day, in addition to the anniversary of Cervantes’s death and Shakespeare’s alleged birth and death. During the application process, Givers choose one book from a list of approximately thirty (the authors partnered with WBN to donate these titles to promote reading). This year’s titles included works by Michael Connelly, Suzanne Collins, Sherman Alexie and Alice Sebold among other distinguished and popular authors. On April 23, Givers in the USA, UK and Ireland staked out their giveaway locales—restaurants, coffee shops, street corners, offices—and gave away twenty free, specially-bound WBN copies of their chosen book to their community’s reluctant readers. Givers and receivers were encouraged to share their experiences on Facebook and Twitter (using the hashtag #wbnamerica) to spread the word that reading is cool again and rewarding, too. WBNAmerica’s Youtube video covers the highlights of the program and its press coverage by ABC News.

Great guides for newbies!

These are more like keyboard shortcuts than like features and benefits to be used when advising clients. However, you can learn how to prevent sharing of a Google+ post (although I can't see many scenarios where that would be needed if you're a business with a Google+ presence).

Teaching kids to be ‘digital citizens’ (not just ‘digital natives’)

Teaching kids to be ‘digital citizens’ (not just ‘digital natives’) | FromBirnamWood and School Libraries | Scoop.it
Technology is not value-free. John Merrow explains how to turn kids — who are digital natives — into good digital citizens.

School librarians have the tools and skills to teach these kids how to define their research questions and sift through the information flood that is the Internet.  Every generation is going to need this help, but our digital world is all kids know about information seeking and gathering.
