Florida Inmates Bare Their Hearts

Florida Inmates Bare Their Hearts | And Justice For All | Scoop.it

On many nights, the inmates’ families used to stand at the window, faces pressed against the glass, waiting to see if they were in trouble, if they were alive – if, like the prodigal son, they would ever come home. But on January 19, the roles were reversed at South Bay Correctional Institution, a privately administered prison in Florida.

How to Fund an American Police State: Real Money for an Imaginary War | And Justice For All | Scoop.it

At the height of the Occupy Wall Street evictions, it seemed as though some diminutive version of “shock and awe” had stumbled from Baghdad, Iraq, to Oakland, California. American police forces had been “militarized,” many commentators worried, as though the firepower and callous tactics on display were anomalies, surprises bursting upon us from nowhere.

Watts 1965 and Some Thoughts About Police Violence… | And Justice For All | Scoop.it

Earlier this week, the 1965 Watts Rebellion came up in the context of a sociology class that I teach at a local university. Unsurprisingly many of my students knew little to nothing about the history of this police riot... Almost no one knew of the central role that a militarized police force played in both inciting and then ultimately brutally repressing the rebellion.  [via @prisonculture]

Michelle Alexander’s ‘New Jim Crow’ Raises Drug Law Debates | And Justice For All | Scoop.it

The book marshals pages of statistics and legal citations to argue that the get-tough approach to crime that began in the Nixon administration and intensified with Ronald Reagan’s declaration of the war on drugs has devastated black America. Today, Professor Alexander writes, nearly one-third of black men are likely to spend time in prison at some point, only to find themselves falling into permanent second-class citizenship after they get out

Let Prisoners Vote

Let Prisoners Vote | And Justice For All | Scoop.it

...disenfranchisement laws are "a vestige of medieval times when offenders were banished from the community and suffered 'civil death.' Brought from Europe to the colonies, these laws gained new political salience at the end the nineteenth century when disgruntled whites in a number of Southern states adopted them and other ostensibly race-neutral voting restrictions in an effort to exclude blacks from the vote."

Getting Personal: “My Life as a Prison Wife” | And Justice For All | Scoop.it

My husband and I wrote our own vows for our wedding. In mine, I didn’t say: “I take you for better or for worse,” but instead said: “We will confront challenges head on and we will overcome them as a team — big challenges, little challenges, difficult or easy,” and I meant it.... We got married on April 4th and just over a month later, on May 13th, my husband was arrested for armed robbery of two pharmacies.
