By better understanding how the brain develops into an "adult brain", we might gain better insight into how age relates to culpability, perhaps requiring us to modify the arbitrary line drawn at 18 years.

At the Houston Chronicle on Sunday, James Pinkerton offered up a rare adumbration of all 18 county-level pots of "discretionary funds" available in particular to the District Attorney and the Sheriff. The sources? "The discretionary funds are raked in after seizures from gambling raids, drug busts, or amassed from fees for writing hot checks or evading county highway tolls."

The Myth of Militant Atheism | Psychology Today | And Justice For All | Scoop.it

In all of American history, it is doubtful that any person has ever been killed in the name of atheism. In fact, it would be difficult to find evidence that any American has ever even been harmed in the name of atheism. It just does not happen, because the notion of "militant atheism" is entirely fantasy.

A Frightening Statistic

A Frightening Statistic | And Justice For All | Scoop.it

America is in real trouble when we begin to study how children are treated in the institutional setting. And in most cases, this attitude really has only one intended result: to track some of our most challenged children into the “prison industrial complex.” If for some reason you do not believe that such a thing is real, you can check the stock exchange listings where companies such as Corrections Corporation of America are publicly traded.

Rodney King's Arrest Record: What It Says About Us | And Justice For All | Scoop.it

The video of the brutal beating momentarily changed a complacency about policing and race relations, and it changed the face of South Los Angeles (formerly South Central), but it certainly has not changed the fact that America's incarceration policies favor the constant lockdown of men and women who are more troubled than sociopathically violent or destructive.

Many of these prisoners have become translucent in skin color – not just light skinned but actually a ghostly see-through type of image. Many have lost their hearing because the only sounds they ever hear are those of the metal doors slamming shut. Many have poor eyesight because the only light they ever get is from the fluorescent lights that fill the SHU.

Forgotten Fathers: Parenting and the Prison Industrial Complex

Forgotten Fathers: Parenting and the Prison Industrial Complex | And Justice For All | Scoop.it

Happy father’s day to all the fathers and grandfathers, but especially to those in Attica, San Quentin, Angola, and countless other prisons throughout the United States. For many, this is a day of celebration, of happiness and reflection. It is a day where kids give their dads homemade gifts and extra-special hugs. While everyday as a parent brings smiles and laughter, it is day where it is hard not to feel special as a dad. Yet, it should also be a day of reflection, where we as a society think about those who are unable to celebrate as a family. I am speaking about those among us who as Angela Davis laments have disappeared from the public imagination: incarcerated fathers.

The Ugly Truth of Mandatory Drug Sentencing

The Ugly Truth of Mandatory Drug Sentencing | And Justice For All | Scoop.it

This is a simple truth: the United States is the only country in the first world that imposes life sentences to teenagers for small-time, non-violent drug offenses. In fact, the American legal system does so with alarming regularity, spending $40 billion a year to lock up hundreds of thousands of low-level dealers. The practice began when Ronald Reagan declared a "War on Drugs" in 1986, and has spread steadily since then. The following year, Congress enacted its federal mandatory sentencing guidelines, which automatically buried tens of thousands of low-level, non-violent drug offenders in the belly of the beast for decades—even for multiple life terms.
