Knowledge & life turning today into a (google) search. Algorithms are key!

Stephen Dale's curator insight, March 26, 1:35 AM

"We are in the era of the algorithm. They decide what news we will see, they decide which person is important and they will even merge more and more into our non-digital lives.

But the biggest and realest danger lies in us. If we believe that there is only one truth and that is the one generated by a black-box algorithm we might be deceived easily."

A reminder, then, that algorithm's should not take the place of critical thinking.

What makes a data visualization memorable?

What makes a data visualization memorable? | DataVis | Scoop.it
It's easy to spot a "bad" data visualization -- one packed with too much text, excessive ornamentation, gaudy colors, and clip art. Design guru Edward Tufte derided such decorations as redundant at best, useless at worst, labeling them "chart junk." Yet a debate still rages among visualization experts: Can these reviled extra elements serve a purpose? Taking a scientific approach to design, researchers from Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology are offering a new take on that debate. The same design elements that attract so much criticism, they report, can also make a visualization more memorable...

Learning From Mistakes in Visualization

Learning From Mistakes in Visualization | DataVis | Scoop.it

Doing data visualizations correctly takes careful consideration. Incorrectly visualizing something can be misleading, embarassing, and even damaging to reputations. In order to do it correctly, it can often be useful to think about the visualization from several different angles before settling on the final version.

Looking at good examples of data visualization is certainly a great way to learn, but equal value can be found in examining visualizations that didn’t work so well.

How can we create beautiful and informative data visualizations that everyone understands?

How can we create beautiful and informative data visualizations that everyone understands? | DataVis | Scoop.it
We have more data available to us than ever before and in an increasingly visual world, audiences look to images to make sense of things. We must refine how we present information visually in order to better inform audiences and ourselves. There are many tools available to make data visualizations, but the tools and the visualizations alone are not enough. We need to enlighten users by guiding them through the complexity, using stories and design. In this exploding landscape of many visual data forms, multimedia and interactivity, we need to create content not only for our “super users,” but also actively help our larger audience understand them...

Why Infographics are a Great Way to Show the History of the World

Why Infographics are a Great Way to Show the History of the World | DataVis | Scoop.it

Often, complex stories are more easily communicated, understood and, ultimately, remembered, when they take visual form.

Aside from data and words, infographics use images and graphical representations. Those key elements – images, words and numbers – operate as a system for simplifying information, revealing new patterns, and producing new knowledge in various fields. In fact, they might not have always been called “infographics,” but info/data-based visualizations have always been around.

The Science Behind Data Visualisation

The Science Behind Data Visualisation | DataVis | Scoop.it

'Over the last couple of centuries, data visualisation has developed to the point where it is in everyday use across all walks of life. Many recognise it as an effective tool for both storytelling and analysis, overcoming most language and educational barriers. But why is this? How are abstract shapes and colours often able to communicate large amounts of data more effectively than a table of numbers or paragraphs of text?

An understanding of human perception will not only answer this question, but will also provide clear guidance and tools for improving the design of your own visualisations.

In order to understand how we are able to interpret data visualisations so effectively, we must start by examining the basics of how we perceive and process information, in particular visual information.'
