Is asking what the budget is a good question?

Is asking what the budget is a good question? | Freelancing Tips | Scoop.it
Knowing the budget before starting your project will help you determine the
amount of time and energy you will invest the solution.
Deborah Fillman's insight:

YES, 1000X yes! Always ask! If they don't have a budget, they should, and if they do, you need to know what it is so you don't waste time spinning your wheels on a proposal you can't possibly win. But let's say you do win the work--your proposal accidentally lines up with what they're comfortable paying--if they don't have a budget, or have one but it's based on false assumptions about the RETURN they can get on that investment--your not knowing what it was, or what return they wanted for it, sets you up to fail if the work product doesn't deliver those results. That product might be GREAT, for someone else's budget and expectations, but your client's perception of quality will depend heavily on ROI. So unless you want unsatisfied clients, ask up front about their budget.

How much time do productivity methods REALLY save you?

How much time do productivity methods REALLY save you? | Freelancing Tips | Scoop.it
Productivity methods can save you weeks of productive time every year. Here is a blueprint for gaining an extra two weeks of productive time every year.
Deborah Fillman's insight:
Here's a question though: what if by aggregating, you end up mistakenly thinking the time you've "saved" can be safely spent using email, social media, etc., and you end up wasting MORE? After all, wasn't the personal computer (never mind the Internet) supposed to "save time?" In reality, we are more info-overloaded than ever. So "productivity" is one of those words that can't be so easily quantified by aggregating time spent accessing information. It's how much information we have to access and sift through before finding relevance that matters.

5+ Ways to Survive Freelancing Famine Periods - Freelance Folder

5+ Ways to Survive Freelancing Famine Periods - Freelance Folder | Freelancing Tips | Scoop.it
Any long-term freelancer will tell you that most freelancers go through ups and downs–periods of high pay and periods of low pay. But the feast or famine cycle can take new freelancers by surprise.
Deborah Fillman's insight:
Good ideas! I'd add one: "productize" something you've done in the past. Maybe you've done a site evaluation for usability, or written a competitive analysis for marketing, or a white paper for another client? Find a way to package it as a DIY kit, or tip sheet or e-book, and either sell it for an impossible to refuse price, or give it away for a contact email. One caveat: it MUST be high quality and make them want MORE.

Deborah Fillman's insight:

The reality is, when you're just starting out, everyone gives you advice, and it's OK to ignore much of it if you do it thoughtfully. They mean well--your family and friends--but if they've never done it, they don't understand, and if they have done it, they may have already forgotten how they got started and became successful.

Even if they haven't forgotten, they aren't YOU. Let's face it, you became a freelancer in part for the flexibility, so go ahead and be flexible. The great thing about freelancing is, you can always adapt--if something isn't working, change it!
