METROPOLITAN CAMP CITY

Diego Pacheco Gonzalez's insight:

Our aim for Borderless is to organize the growth of refugee camps that would occur along a border condition such that, the future development from this pattern can progress into a city. Therefore, we see the border as an opportunity of organizing two areas for connection and exchange, using a shared infrastructure. We want to increase the density of these patterns between the regions by blurring the definition of the border and creating an area consisting of multiple city centers.

The locations which we selected as the catalyst for this growth were the camps of refugee and displaced persons from Burma residing in Thailand. After researching the limitations of camps to evolve into a city, the problem appeared to be as a result of a series of issues, mainly related to the lack of organized facilities such as electricity and water and right to own the land. As much as this condition of camps is restrictive, these rules also allow for the organic development in the camps through the ability to relocate easily. Our strategy is to allow for the emergent growth of camps to still occur, but with a means that accounts for this growth and provides an organizing structure for facilities and promote densification.

We wanted to generate a connection between two existing cities that could be a location for a camp city. The assumed distance between camp centers was 1 km which represents about 15 minutes walking. Additional local connections of shortest paths at walkable slopes were developed to connect to the first city routes. For the placement of typologies, we analyzed the slopes adjacent to the most efficient paths. The range of inhabitable sloped areas was categorized for potential site developments. Only areas within the walkable distance were considered. To design the clustering of typologies into neighborhoods, the areas of inhabitable slope areas and path adjacency determined locations on site for the design. Each neighborhood cluster was designed to have four typologies; cabins, courtyard houses, housing blocks, and public spaces. The environmental conditions of water runoffs were analyzed to determine the run off paths and evaluate the placement of the typologies. Within the neighborhood clusters, the importance of local connections was developed to determine proximity to centers. This showed the potential for crossing paths between the clusters and the likeliness of clusters to merge from these connections. The paths connecting all clusters were re-evaluated at a local scale that worked with the slope and adjacency determined from previous steps. The end design shows a system of walkable paths and distances that are connected to clusters of typologies. These clusters have varying conditions of density that relate to the slope and proximity to centers.

Cities develop in locations that provide potential of growth through connections. The growth of cities is linked to the flow of people which generates development through densification. The flow of people into a city follows the infrastructure and develops around the facilities that are connected. Our proposal applies techniques that take into account aspects of the site which can act as generating strategies for the development into a city. This densification promotes the flow and connections necessary for growth, which has the potential to unify multiple cities into areas along the border and thereby remove the identity of separation.
