U.N. sees Syria humanitarian corridor “not Justified” | English | NEWS | DayPress

U.N. sees Syria humanitarian corridor “not Justified” | English | NEWS | DayPress | Freedom Syria | Scoop.it

FS Says:

"At present, the humanitarian needs identified in Syria do not warrant the implementation of either of those mechanisms." That is what the UN said in a statement put out in Nov 2011. (see article)

The situation has now changed completely. No effort should now be spared in establishing a humanitarian corridor to assist those people dying on Syrian streets.

Lavrov should leave Assad with one clear Msg. Stop spilling the blood of UR own PPL!

Lavrov should leave Assad with one clear Msg. Stop spilling the blood of UR own PPL! | Freedom Syria | Scoop.it

Freedom Syria says:

Since the collapse of communism Russia has fought to establish international credibility. It supported a limited military initiative in Libya and then stood back and watched whilst a Western alliance made up predominantly of France, Britain and, to a lesser extent, the US, provided military cover and assistance for rebels desperate for regime change.

In Libya, France and Britain had no alternative other than to support regime change. Had they not done so, Benghazi which, at the time, was under massive siege by Gadaffi forces would have been completely overrun. The ensuing bloodbath would have been tremendous.

Now, in the case of Syria, the international community is faced with a completely different dilemma. The lack of cohesion in the opposition forces is even greater in Syria than it was in Libya. Pan-national alliances and are more clearly marked out, with Russia and Iran having a clear and historical links to the Assad regime. There is, in the current situation, much more at stake internationally.

It is time for Russia to take its international responsibilities seriously and exert its influence in Syria. This is the only way to establish its credibility in the longer term. It can do this by making absolutely clear to President Al-Assad that the spilling of Syrian blood on the streets of Homs and other cities must stop, and stop now!  This should be Lavrovs' unequivocal message. If he fails to imprint this on the minds of those sustaining this murderous regime, the prospect of the Middle East becoming a tinderbox for international conflict will become much more real.

International military action in Syria: bad for us all!

International military action in Syria: bad for us all! | Freedom Syria | Scoop.it

Freedom Syria says:

All possible effort should be made to reach a diplomatic solution to the Syrian situation. Syria is not Libya. The repression that is currently being conducted there has the potential to ignite a tinder-box that could drag different factions into an international conflict.

Striving for international unity is the key. Russia and Chinas' obstruction to an international consensus, far from discouraging agitation against (their own) oppressive regimes, may cement and harden internal opposition to their endorsement of Syrian state terrorism. Putin, who is the real power in Russia, cannot afford to get this one wrong if he is to be re-elected.

Assad would be only too happy to addition layers of complexity to this conflict by dragging others in. Al-Assad must go, but in a manner that limits the damage to us all!

Assad must *NOT* be allowed to internationalize his problem!

Assad must *NOT* be allowed to internationalize his problem! | Freedom Syria | Scoop.it

Freedom Syria says:

It is understandable, in view of the carnage now being played out on the streets of Syrian cities, that many are now calling for robust international action to arm the Free Syrian Army. As we witness the maiming of men, women and children it is tempting to turn up the the gain on such calls.

Further.  Some are claiming that, after the UN failure to secure a consensus on Syria, the channels of diplomacy have now closed. Those making such claims have referred to “Russian and Chinese recklessness” in sabotaging a UN resolution.

However such a lack of faith in the power of diplomacy is premature. Whatever one thinks of Russian and Chinese veto it was most certainly not “reckless”. It was, on the contrary, the result of careful calculation informed by naked self interest. It is the action of those who now call for an end to diplomatic efforts to persuade Pres. Al-Assad to see reason, and for him to go without spilling any more blood, who are reckless.

There is a significant risk of a dangerous escalation in the international tension with regard to the situation in Syria. Al-Assad would like nothing better than to internationalize his problem. Therefore, all interested parties should continue to spare no effort in applying maximum diplomatic pressure with the sole aim of consigning this tyrannical and murderous regime to history.
