Hotel Slaves « Love and Justice

Human trafficking is a complicated root system connecting all countries in an underground slave-trading network. If we cut down the weed in one location, another will pop up elsewhere. If we could save the girls in this hotel we would free a few, but more would be brought to replace them, because the supply of girls from impoverished families is endless.

The human trafficking network is powerful—seemingly invincible. But with cooperation and determination, we can abolish the hidden slave trade, one freed “flower” at a time. A source of inspiration is William Wilberforce, the great abolitionist of the black slave trade who resolutely fought and changed the world.

Oklahoma City is crossroads of human trafficking for labor, sex, officials say | NewsOK.com

Oklahoma’s position along the Interstate-40 and I-35 corridor makes it a hub for traffickers smuggling people in from Mexico and Texas port cities.

Social problems in the state, including high poverty and incarceration rates, domestic abuse, teen pregnancy and drug addiction, make it a prime area for traffickers seeking vulnerable women and children to exploit.

“When you’re looking for poor, broken women who’ve been abused, these are fertile grounds,” said Mark Elam, director of the Tulsa-based Oklahomans Against Trafficking of Humans.

Human trafficking summit explores darker side  | ajc.com

There is hope, because heightened attention to the problem has spurred government action.

The U.S. departments of Justice, Homeland Security and Labor announced last week that Atlanta had been selected as a site for one of six anti-trafficking coordination teams. The others sites are El Paso, Texas; Kansas City, Mo.; Los Angeles; Memphis; and Miami.

The GBI also formed a human trafficking unit with four investigators on July 1, according to GBI Director Vernon Keenan.

Guest Blogger Series: Texas State Sen. Leticia Van de Putte “Human Trafficking: A Domestic Issue” : La Plaza

Human Trafficking is the second largest criminal industry in the world. I’m sure that fact, from the Polaris Project, is surprising to many of you.

Here’s another: slightly more than half of all domestic victims in alleged human trafficking incidents are U.S. citizens. That fact, from the Department of Justice’s Human Trafficking Reporting System, is perhaps even more startling.
