For people with reading and writing difficulties, having text reinforced by hearing it read aloud can be very useful. Specialised programs have existed to do this for a long time, and in many cases are extremely helpful and highly appropriate and should be seriously considered, perhaps in consultation with professional advice where necessary.

WordTalk is a free text-to-speech plugin developed for use with all versions of Microsoft Word (from Word 97 up to Word 2010). It will speak the text of the document and will highlight it as it goes. It contains a talking dictionary to help decide which word spelling is most appropriate.

Personalize Learning: The Expert Learner with Voice and Choice

Personalize Learning: The Expert Learner with Voice and Choice | 21st Century Teaching and Learning Resources | Scoop.it

Who is the Expert Learner?
Expert learners take responsibility for their learning. They view learning as something they do for themselves, not something that is done to them or for them. [Source: The Expert Learner]

The Universal Design for Learning (UDL) perspective for the Expert Learner is for a learner to be:
> Resourceful and knowledgeable

> Strategic and goal-directed

> Purposeful and motivated

Then how can you develop expert learners with voice and choice?

The Three Stages of Personalized Learning Environments provide the process to encourage learner voice. This process can guide the design of personalized learning environments that meets the needs of all learners.  Stage One is teacher-centered and encourages learner voice and some choice. Learner voice is a critical first step. There are ways to do this and this table here describes how the teacher and learner roles change in this stage.

When learners have the opportunities to say what they think and be heard by their peers and others, they feel their opinions and perspectives are valued and appreciated. Think about yourself as a learner and what it might feels like if you have a voice in how you learn and even influence decisions about teaching and learning.

A Glog that Tells the UDL Story

A Glog that Tells the UDL Story | 21st Century Teaching and Learning Resources | Scoop.it

"No two students are the same, no two students process information the same, and therefore students deserve to have information presented in multiple ways, students should be encouraged to showcase their knowledge in multiple ways, and students should be motivated in multiple ways." Melissa tells the story of UDL and includes video of UDL and the three principles along with the tools that can help support a diversity of learners in the classroom:   the CAST Lesson Builder, UDL Curriculum Self-check and Book Builder.

"Metacognition is the process of thinking about your thinking. That may sound convoluted, but it makes sense if you take a step back and think about it for a moment. Rather than just accept that you got something wrong, think about why you got it wrong."

Best Chrome Extensions: Awesome Tab for Google Chrome | Google Gooru | 21st Century Teaching and Learning Resources | Scoop.it

The Awesome Tab Extension is a very cool Chrome Extension that makes your “New Tab” page look very avant-guarde. It has a black background and a bunch of widgets that come with it. It looks a lot better than the native Chrome tabs page and it also gives you lots of different capabilities in terms of having all of your google apps in one place. This video is for both administrators and end-users and I think you’ll find it to be a very neat-looking and useful Chrome Extension.

Guide: Tying Common Core and English-Proficiency

Guide: Tying Common Core and English-Proficiency | 21st Century Teaching and Learning Resources | Scoop.it
New guidelines advise states on the language skills English-learners will need to handle the tougher academic content.

To help states with that task, the Washington-based Council of Chief State School Officers late last month released a detailed set of guidelines created by English-language-learner experts and some of the lead writers of the Common Core State Standards in English/language arts and mathematics, as well as the Next Generation Science Standards.

The new guide, or framework, as it's formally called, is designed to be a road map for states as they update, revamp, and rewrite the English-language-proficiency standards that teachers will use as guideposts to help ELL students acquire the academic language necessary to learn the new content.

UDL Guides Personalizing Learning to Meet the Common Core

UDL Guides Personalizing Learning to Meet the Common Core | 21st Century Teaching and Learning Resources | Scoop.it

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is used to design curriculum, lessons and instruction based on the diversity of the learners in their classroom.

How can UDL guide personalize learning to meet the Common Core?

When a teacher understands his/her learners through the UDL lens, he/she creates a flexible learning environment and provides opportunities for learner voice and choice. When lessons are designed using the UDL model, the lesson includes goals, methods, materials, tools, and assessments to reach and support the maximum amount of learners in the classroom.

Learners can use this model to help them understand how they learn best and what learning path they can take to become an independent expert learner, leveraging their natural abilities in the process. This process helps the learner create their personal learning profile that is understood by both teacher and learner.

The importance of this strategy is that both the teacher and the learner understand who the learner is and how they learn best. The learner and the teacher uses the UDL lens to personalize learning. So what does that look like?

An example of an 8th Grade unit on the Civil War serves as an example along with two students who can meet a number of CCSS when they choose and use the tools to support their learning.

Explore our new website, Personalize Learning (www.personalizelearning.com), to learn more about the research, models and educators who are personalizing learning.

Common Curriculum is a new online lesson planning resource that aims to help you align your lessons to Common Core standards. In Common Curriculum you can enter your courses and write your lesson plans.

After you enter a lesson plan into your Common Curriculum planner you can click "search for standard" to have Common Curriculum search for Common Core standards that might match your lesson plan. The more text that you include in your lesson plan the more likely Common Curriculum is to find Common Core standards that match your lesson plans.

Recommended iPad Book Apps for Older & Reluctant Readers Ages 8-12 | The Digital Media Diet

Recommended iPad Book Apps for Older & Reluctant Readers Ages 8-12 | The Digital Media Diet | 21st Century Teaching and Learning Resources | Scoop.it

Of all the requests for recommendations I get, the most common seems to be from parents & teachers looking for book apps for children in 4-6+ grades (ages 10-12+) who are struggling with basic reading skills.

“What can you recommend for my students who are in 5th grade but read at a much lower level? They think most picture books are ‘babyish’ so anything that will appeal to them would be much appreciated.” ~ Teacher comment from Facebook

This is one of the comments that stands out as representing the overall tone of these requests. So this list, not really a top 10 but more of a reading list, is my top recommendations for children who are not quite at grade level for reading skill but need books with topics and stories that appeal to their maturity level and interests. These are books with a variety of subjects. Many have the option for narration with highlighting word-for-word. I’ve broken them down into categories instead of a ranked listing, to aid parents & educators as they select book apps for older readers. As I come across new titles, I will add them to this post. If you have a suggestion for this list, please let me know in a comment.

The 21st Century Principal

The 21st Century Principal | 21st Century Teaching and Learning Resources | Scoop.it

According to Kitty Porterfield and Meg Carnes, in the book Why Social Media Matters: School Communication in the Digital Age, school leaders should

“Think of your website as home base for your school information platform.”

A great deal is written about school leaders engaging in the use of social media. I myself have done the same. But, most of us have a more powerful way to communicate information and image to the broader world than social media, and that is our school or district web presence.
