Guidelines and Principles : About UDL : Universal Design For Learning : University of Vermont

Guidelines and Principles : About UDL : Universal Design For Learning : University of Vermont | 21st Century Teaching and Learning Resources | Scoop.it

The goal of education in the 21st century is not simply the mastery of knowledge. It is the mastery of learning. Education should help turn novice learners into expert learners-individuals who know how to learn, who want to learn, and who, in their own highly individual ways, are well prepared for a lifetime of learning. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an approach that addresses and redresses the primary barrier to making expert learners of all students: inflexible, one-size-fits-all curricula that raise unintentional barriers to learning. Learners with disabilities are most vulnerable to such barriers, but many students without disabilities also find that curricula are poorly designed to meet their learning needs.

Critical Review of Connectivism: A Learning Theory for the Digital Age

Critical Review of Connectivism: A Learning Theory for the Digital Age | 21st Century Teaching and Learning Resources | Scoop.it

In his 2005 article Connectivism: A Learning Theory for the Digital Age, Siemens outlined a new way of thinking about learning based on the recent advances in information technology. He argues that this new theory, connectivism, supersedes previous learning theories, including behaviourism, cognitivism, and contructivism. In this post, I am seeking to further my understanding of this new theory, examine its limitations, and consider its relevance to both classroom teaching as well as knowledge management practices within organizations.

Survey Finds College Admissions Officers’ Discovery of Online Material Damaging to Applicants Triples

Survey Finds College Admissions Officers’ Discovery of Online Material Damaging to Applicants Triples | 21st Century Teaching and Learning Resources | Scoop.it

Over a Quarter of College Admissions Officers Today Include Google or Facebook in Applicant Evaluations; 35% Report Discovering Information that Negatively Impacted Prospective Students’ Admissions Chances – Up from 12% Last Year.

Results from Kaplan Test Prep’s 2012 survey of college admissions officers* show that schools are increasingly discovering information on Facebook and Google that negatively impact applicants’ acceptance chances.

While the percentage of admissions officers who took to Google (27%) and checked Facebook (26%) as part of the applicant review process increased slightly (20% for Google and 26% for Facebook in 2011) from last year, the percentage that said they discovered something that negatively impacted an applicant’s chances of getting into the school nearly tripled – from 12% last year to 35% this year.

Offenses cited included essay plagiarism, vulgarities in blogs, alcohol consumption in photos, things that made them “wonder,” and “illegal activities.” In 2008, when Kaplan began tracking this trend, only one in 10 admissions officers reported checking applicants’ social networking pages.

Final College-Readiness Definition Guides Test Consortium

Final College-Readiness Definition Guides Test Consortium | 21st Century Teaching and Learning Resources | Scoop.it

What does it mean to be college-ready? Half the states in the country have agreed on a definition. And that definition will shape the way student performance is judged in those states in a couple years.

The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, or PARCC, has approved a set of descriptors for the tests it's designing for the Common Core State Standards. They lay out how many levels of achievement there will be on the test, specify what level a student has to reach to be considered "college ready," and describe the level of expertise students must show to merit that title.

"Google's mission is to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful." -- About Google

Google is the most powerful nonhuman teacher ever known to actual humans.

Implicitly and ceaselessly, Google performs formative assessments by collecting the following data: the content, genre and media that interests you most; when and for how long you access your external cloud brain; what your hobbies and routines are; with whom you work and communicate; who will get your November vote; and whether you prefer invigorating clean mint or enamel renewal toothpaste. By continuously refining the nuance of your sociogram, Google has already customized your next web exploration and taught itself to teach.

Free Technology for Teachers: Mind Mapping and Common Core Standards

Free Technology for Teachers: Mind Mapping and Common Core Standards | 21st Century Teaching and Learning Resources | Scoop.it

Earlier today I posted a list of ten mind mapping tools for teachers and students. Some of those tools were used this morning in a workshop that I facilitated in Missoula, Montana. Part of the purpose of the day here is for teachers to get familiar with some of the Common Core standards and some ways to address them. I pulled out some of the Common Core standards that I think mind map and timeline creation address. You can see my list below. Which standards would you add?

(For the purpose of making this post as constructive as possible, I would prefer to not see comments debating the value of Common Core standards. We can have that discussion in another post).

According to The Knowledge Loom, English language learners refer to students who have a first (home, primary or native) language other than English and are in the process of learning English. The article  states there are at least three factors that can affect the amount of time it takes for a student to attain cognitive and academic sufficiency in English:

Research on Language Learning Strategies

CARLA's work on language learning strategies began in 1993 with a research project. The research study focused on the impact of strategies-based instruction on the skill of speaking in a foreign language.

The study examined:

How explicit strategies-based foreign language instruction affects students' speaking proficiency;
Which strategies students report using, how frequently and how effectively they appear to use them;
Ways in which foreign language instructors can be trained to provide strategies-based instruction in their own classrooms.
