'Soft Skills' Pushed as Part of College Readiness

'Soft Skills' Pushed as Part of College Readiness | 21st Century Teaching and Technology Resources | Scoop.it
Resiliency, grit, and self-efficacy are among the so-called "soft skills" increasingly being viewed as vital for college success.

To make it in college, students need to be up for the academic rigor. But that's not all. They also must be able to manage their own time, get along with roommates, and deal with setbacks. Resiliency and grit, along with the ability to communicate and advocate, are all crucial life skills. Yet, experts say, many teenagers lack them, and that's hurting college-completion rates.

MOOC's Take a Major Step Toward College Credit - Technology - The Chronicle of Higher Education | 21st Century Teaching and Technology Resources | Scoop.it
In a pilot project, the American Council on Education will evaluate five to 10 Coursera offerings and may recommend that colleges grant credit for them.

The move could lead to a world in which many students graduate from traditional colleges faster by taking self-guided courses on the side, taught free by professors from Stanford University, the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, and other well-known colleges.

Pearson unveils OER search engine | Inside Higher Ed

Pearson unveils OER search engine | Inside Higher Ed | 21st Century Teaching and Technology Resources | Scoop.it

f you can’t beat them, join them.
That is Pearson’s latest approach to open educational resources (OER) — the free online learning materials that have proliferated over the last decade and a half, posing a threat to traditional publishers.

The education and media company today will unveil Project Blue Sky, a search engine to help instructors locate free materials from popular OER repositories.

The service, which Pearson has built with help from Gooru, a Silicon Valley-based nonprofit that specializes in search, will allow instructors to search for e-book chapters, videos and online exercise software. It will return aggregated results from Harvard Open Courses, Connexions, OER Commons, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Open Courseware, Carnegie Mellon’s Open Learning Initiative, and Wikiversity, among others.

How Teachers Will Use E-Readers to Catch Cheaters

How Teachers Will Use E-Readers to Catch Cheaters | 21st Century Teaching and Technology Resources | Scoop.it
Tricks for catching plagiarizers online are old hat. But now teachers have ways to monitor the time it takes a student to read a text.

These are tough times for plagiarists and would-be academic cheaters. That may seem a counter-intuitive statement, given how much material is online, just waiting to be copied-and-pasted, and how many services are ready to write your papers for you for a nominal (or not so nominal) consideration.

But just as authoritarian governments can use Twitter to spy on their rebellious citizens, so too professors can turn online tools against their students. And now digital reading has become the newest frontier of scholarly surveillance, the newest tool for those of us who like to stand at the center of the academic Panopticon.

ThinkWave – Bringing Key Elements of Administrative and Instructional Technologies Together

ThinkWave – Bringing Key Elements of Administrative and Instructional Technologies Together | 21st Century Teaching and Technology Resources | Scoop.it

Combining elements of the SIS, the LMS/CMS, and a Portal, to create something uniquely powerful.

Recently, ThinkWave co-founder John Poluektov reached out to me to introduce this application to me. On first glance, ThinkWave struck me as being purely an administrative technology, and not really an instructional one. John took the time to provide informative answers to questions I posed and in doing so, made the case that ThinkWave brings elements of some instructional tools together with common administrative functionality to create a tool that facilitates administrative needs while also aiding in instruction-related communications and helping to establish a stronger connection between teacher, student, administrator, and parent.

Gates foundation and ACE go big on MOOC-related grants | Inside Higher Ed | 21st Century Teaching and Technology Resources | Scoop.it

The clearest path to college credit for massive open online courses may soon be through credit recommendations from the American Council of Education (ACE), which announced Tuesday that it will work with Coursera to determine whether as many as 8-10 MOOCs should be worth credit. The council is also working on a similar arrangement with EdX, a MOOC-provider created by elite universities.

Year-round school: Can Raleigh teach Charlotte?

Year-round school: Can Raleigh teach Charlotte? | 21st Century Teaching and Technology Resources | Scoop.it
CMS Superintendent Heath Morrison says he likes the idea of spreading out school breaks, especially for the students most likely to lose academic ground during summer vacation.

Year-round school is an emerging issue in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. But in Wake County it’s a thriving tradition with a 25-year history, and in neighboring Union County it’s an option that a handful of communities have embraced.

3 Things to Consider When Building Interactive E-Learning » The Rapid eLearning Blog

3 Things to Consider When Building Interactive E-Learning » The Rapid eLearning Blog | 21st Century Teaching and Technology Resources | Scoop.it

In a recent post, I built a drag and drop video player where you can select and drag a video title to load a video tutorial. I got lots of questions about how I built the player. Most of the questions were about how I built the drag-and-drop player. So I put together some tutorials and made the file available for download.

Tutorial 1: create the framework
Tutorial 2: add layers and links
Tutorial 3: create the drag and drop
Tutorial 4: design tips
Downloads: file and free font

One reason why the post generated so many questions is because of the novelty of dragging the choice button to load a tutorial video. This makes sense. In most cases this type of demo would have been a click and reveal interaction; but the drag and drop choice added some novel interactivity.
