Ten Steps Toward Universal Design of Online Courses | 21st Century Teaching and Learning Resources | Scoop.it

Implementing the principles of universal design in online learning means anticipating the diversity of students that may enroll in your course and planning accordingly. These ten key elements will greatly enhance the accessibility and usability of your course for students with and without disabilities.

Step 1: Develop content first, then design.
Step 2: Provide simple, consistent navigation.
Step 3: Include an accommodation statement.
Step 4: Choose CMS tools carefully.
Step 5: Model and teach good discussion board etiquette.
Step 6: Use color with care.
Step 7: Provide accessible document formats.
Step 8: Choose fonts carefully.
Step 9: Convert PowerPoint™ to accessible HTML.
Step 10: If it's auditory make it visual; if it is visual make it auditory.

Rob Hatfield, M.Ed.'s insight:

In my opinion, each person has developed or is develping there own learning stratigies...but moviation is the key. Believing in the student is one of the most powerful motivational components. Failure is the real but teaching the student to start again, learn and never quit is another learning strategy has to be taught for them "to believe".

Rob Hatfield, M.Ed.'s insight:

I agree and would go farther that ALL "Brick and Mortar" institutions have to adjust to be functional in the 21st Century. The traditional educational enviroment is no longer tradtional...Universities in Asia have started to adjust to this aspect. A four year education was not only what you learned for your future career but how to get along with other people from other cultures. Therefore, schools will have to rethink all aspects of the "brick and Mortar" schools.

Consortium Releases Technology Guidelines for Common Core Tests

Consortium Releases Technology Guidelines for Common Core Tests | 21st Century Teaching and Learning Resources | Scoop.it
Veteran Education Week reporter and Digital Directions Deputy Editor Sean Cavanagh and Staff Writer Katie Ash explore how technology is shaping teaching and learning and the management of schools.
Rob Hatfield, M.Ed.'s insight:

One of the two consortia designing tests for the Common Core State Standards has released new guidance on the minimum technology standards states will need to meet to give those tests, beginning in 2014-15.

Earlier this month, the other group leading states toward the development of tests to match the Common Core, the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium, released its own list of technology requirements and recommendations for 2014-15.

The new PARCC guidelines are "very similar" to the Smarter Balanced requirements, said Susan Van Gundy, associate director for assessment technology at Achieve, an organization that is managing the partnership consortium's work.

One of the requirements focuses on test security. All devices used during the tests—whether laptops, netbooks, tablets—and operating systems must have the capability to "lock down" and temporarily disable features that present a security risk while exams are being given. Certain features would also need to be controlled during test administration, including unlimited Internet access, certain types of cameras, screen captures, e-mail, and instant-messaging, the requirements say.
