Guidelines and Principles : About UDL : Universal Design For Learning : University of Vermont

Guidelines and Principles : About UDL : Universal Design For Learning : University of Vermont | 21st Century Teaching and Technology Resources | Scoop.it

The goal of education in the 21st century is not simply the mastery of knowledge. It is the mastery of learning. Education should help turn novice learners into expert learners-individuals who know how to learn, who want to learn, and who, in their own highly individual ways, are well prepared for a lifetime of learning. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an approach that addresses and redresses the primary barrier to making expert learners of all students: inflexible, one-size-fits-all curricula that raise unintentional barriers to learning. Learners with disabilities are most vulnerable to such barriers, but many students without disabilities also find that curricula are poorly designed to meet their learning needs.

UDL Accommodations: ELL Student

UDL Accommodations: ELL Student | 21st Century Teaching and Technology Resources | Scoop.it

Michelle Meyer presents some excellent UDL strategies that can support the ELL Student. She describes a learner who has limited English proficiency and offers options to support that learner using the 3 UDL Principles with reference to specific UDL Guidelines and Checkpoints.

According to The Knowledge Loom, English language learners refer to students who have a first (home, primary or native) language other than English and are in the process of learning English. The article  states there are at least three factors that can affect the amount of time it takes for a student to attain cognitive and academic sufficiency in English:

> Age

> Immersion in English

> Similarity to English

Google's Open Course Builder: A Giant Leap into 21st-Century Online Learning

Google's Open Course Builder: A Giant Leap into 21st-Century Online Learning | 21st Century Teaching and Technology Resources | Scoop.it

"Google's mission is to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful." -- About Google

Google is the most powerful nonhuman teacher ever known to actual humans.

Implicitly and ceaselessly, Google performs formative assessments by collecting the following data: the content, genre and media that interests you most; when and for how long you access your external cloud brain; what your hobbies and routines are; with whom you work and communicate; who will get your November vote; and whether you prefer invigorating clean mint or enamel renewal toothpaste. By continuously refining the nuance of your sociogram, Google has already customized your next web exploration and taught itself to teach.

Free Technology for Teachers: Mind Mapping and Common Core Standards

Free Technology for Teachers: Mind Mapping and Common Core Standards | 21st Century Teaching and Technology Resources | Scoop.it

Earlier today I posted a list of ten mind mapping tools for teachers and students. Some of those tools were used this morning in a workshop that I facilitated in Missoula, Montana. Part of the purpose of the day here is for teachers to get familiar with some of the Common Core standards and some ways to address them. I pulled out some of the Common Core standards that I think mind map and timeline creation address. You can see my list below. Which standards would you add?

(For the purpose of making this post as constructive as possible, I would prefer to not see comments debating the value of Common Core standards. We can have that discussion in another post).

Pearson unveils OER search engine | Inside Higher Ed | 21st Century Teaching and Technology Resources | Scoop.it

f you can’t beat them, join them.
That is Pearson’s latest approach to open educational resources (OER) — the free online learning materials that have proliferated over the last decade and a half, posing a threat to traditional publishers.

The education and media company today will unveil Project Blue Sky, a search engine to help instructors locate free materials from popular OER repositories.

The service, which Pearson has built with help from Gooru, a Silicon Valley-based nonprofit that specializes in search, will allow instructors to search for e-book chapters, videos and online exercise software. It will return aggregated results from Harvard Open Courses, Connexions, OER Commons, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Open Courseware, Carnegie Mellon’s Open Learning Initiative, and Wikiversity, among others.

The following blog post was written by Eye On Education's Senior Editor, Lauren Davis.

Three popular ways to teach students to discover knowledge are through project-based learning, problem-based learning, and inquiry-based learning. These terms are often used interchangeably, although there are some differences among them. Eduscape’s Teacher Tap site has a great explanation of the differences. Here is a brief overview:

Research on Language Learning Strategies

CARLA's work on language learning strategies began in 1993 with a research project. The research study focused on the impact of strategies-based instruction on the skill of speaking in a foreign language.

The study examined:

How explicit strategies-based foreign language instruction affects students' speaking proficiency;
Which strategies students report using, how frequently and how effectively they appear to use them;
Ways in which foreign language instructors can be trained to provide strategies-based instruction in their own classrooms.
