How the Power of Interest Drives Learning

How the Power of Interest Drives Learning | 21st Century Teaching and Technology Resources | Scoop.it

In recent years researchers have begun to build a science of interest, investigating what interest is, how interest develops, what makes things interesting, and how we can cultivate interest in ourselves and others. They are finding that interest can help us think more clearly, understand more deeply, and remember more accurately. Interest has the power to transform struggling performers, and to lift high achievers to a new plane.

So what is interest? Interest is a psychological state of engagement, experienced in the moment, and also a predisposition to engage repeatedly with particular ideas, events, or objects over time. Why do we have it? Paul Silvia of the University of North Carolina speculates that interest acts as an “approach urge” that pushes back against the “avoid urges” that would keep us in the realm of the safe and familiar. Interest pulls us toward the new, the edgy, the exotic. As Silvia puts it, interest “diversifies experience.” But interest also focuses experience. In a world too full of information, interests usefully narrow our choices: they lead us to pay attention to this and not to that

Rob Hatfield, M.Ed.'s insight:

Inquiry/problem-based learning is the driving force for innovation and creativity, now and in the future.

Mark Fuson's curator insight, July 19, 7:03 AM

I must admit, I've got to get better at some of these. One of the biggest issues with learning something is practice and practice takes time and the willingness to fail. Unfortunately, teachers often are so rushed by their schedules that they can't afford to struggle with something in order to learn it because they have 165 students, 3 different preps, papers to grade, a family life, and curriculum to create. Unless we change these factors, how can a teacher learn new skills in the classroom and why would they try to if experiencing a little failure could negatively impact evaluation?

Kim Lindskog's curator insight, July 25, 2:07 PM

As we think about what it is that we want to help teachers with in relation to Google apps...this might help with the conversation.

The 4 Levels Of Learning Analytics | Edudemic

The 4 Levels Of Learning Analytics | Edudemic | 21st Century Teaching and Technology Resources | Scoop.it

Using data to drive learning outcomes isn’t a new concept, really. For as long as teachers have been giving students assessments, the assessments and results have been used by both students and teachers (even if only loosely) to determine how to move forward. What needs to be reviewed more? What was covered/studied well?

Learning analytics takes this concept and kicks it up a notch. Well, more like a thousand notches, especially if you’re considering things like adaptive computer based testing that changes as students use it.
