Making Learning Meaningful: 6 Priorities For Whole Learning

There is, of course, no single “best” way to pursue “21st century learning”–nor any learning at all for that matter. But seeing the way other inspired educators pursue the idea can teach each one of us a lot. In this model, we appreciate the inclusion of self-knowledge, as well as moving past the idea of content to true disciplinary knowledge–seeing knowledge in context and application.

The Secret of Self-Regulated Learning | Faculty Focus

The Secret of Self-Regulated Learning | Faculty Focus | 21st Century Teaching and Technology Resources | Scoop.it
Self-regulated learning is like your own little secret. It stirs from within you, and is the voice in your head that asks you questions about your learning.

More formally, self-regulated learning is the conscious planning, monitoring, evaluation, and ultimately control of one’s learning in order to maximize it. It’s an ordered process that experts and seasoned learners like us practice automatically. It means being mindful, intentional, reflective, introspective, self-aware, self-controlled, and self-disciplined about learning, and it leads to becoming self-directed.
Rob Hatfield, M.Ed.'s insight:

This teaching approach can be included within both inquiry and problem-based learning strategies which can be blended in your 21 st century teaching and learning environments.

There are probably hundreds of ways, if not more, to have students use their mobile devices in the classroom in a format geared towards learning rather than for leisure.

The handy infographic below takes a look at ten fairly general ways to use devices in the classroom. The general nature of some of the recommendations makes it a great starting point if this is a newer concept for you or for a particular group that you’re working.

5 Things Researchers Have Discovered About MOOCs | Wired Campus - Chronicle of Higher Education

5 Things Researchers Have Discovered About MOOCs | Wired Campus - Chronicle of Higher Education | 21st Century Teaching and Technology Resources | Scoop.it

In December 2013 a group of academics gathered during a Texas snowstorm and began the second phase of a discussion about massive open online courses. They were not terribly impressed by the hype the courses had received in the popular media, and they had set out to create a better body of literature about MOOCs—albeit a less sensational one.

The MOOC Research Initiative, backed by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, had given many of those academics research grants to study what was going on in the online courses. Now the organization has posted preliminary findings from some of those research projects.

Rob Hatfield, M.Ed.'s insight:

"The findings have not yet been peer-reviewed and should not be generalized, but they do represent some of the most rigorous analysis to date on MOOCs."

Review these interesting research results which can lead to improvement to your MOOC-based Blended learning environment.

Making Games: The Ultimate Project-Based Learning | Mind/Shift

Making Games: The Ultimate Project-Based Learning | Mind/Shift | 21st Century Teaching and Technology Resources | Scoop.it
Game making is one way to create a space where students are empowered to freely experiment with their own way of framing ideas and choosing perspectives. In this way, game making is tantamount to project-based learning.
Rob Hatfield, M.Ed.'s insight:

"I’ve written a lot about metacognition in this series, emphasizing the importance of teaching kids to think about their own thinking. With game design students take metacognition to the next level, learning that ideas are constructed. They understand that knowledge is always framed from a particular perspective, with a particular kind of intention. The benefits of this kind of reflexive consideration are intellectual, social, and emotional."

I use metacognitive learning strategies within each and every class. I have found that in addition to teaching business English, I am also teaching my young Thai ESL  adult learners how to learn, think and reflect.
