Restricting the number of enrolees seems to be desirable from FutureLearn's prospective.  It will be interesting to see what value they find that they get from limiting enrollment, even though the limit is high (10,000).

Advise companies (or nations) how to use a product you’re giving away for free—as Red Hat and EdX both do—and you’re offering more of a service than a good.  That model, successful for Red Hat is hard to imagine in an academic environment.

We may be searching for 'Moore's law' of the rate of evolution of educational effectiveness.  Will residential universities double in some key performance indicators every 18 months?  Will distance learning?  Applying the innovation and improvement methodologies that have dominated IT, intruded into manufacturing, disrupted the music industry, and are influencing health-care will evolve all forms of education -- what is the constant -- 18 months, 12 months, or shorter?

By their very nature MOOCs lose money as they are offering free classes to anyone who wishes to enroll. Right now the three main MOOC start-ups are relying on funding from venture capitalists, colleges and other interested parties.
