140 Massive Open Online Courses Getting Started in June: Enroll in a MOOC Today

140 Massive Open Online Courses Getting Started in June: Enroll in a MOOC Today | Free Education | Scoop.it
Have some downtime this summer? Would your time be well spent taking a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC)? Then you'll want to look through the slew of summer MOOCs getting started this June.
David J MacFadyen's insight:

Here is a resource for free ebooks, courses, talks, and more.  Our problem is that there is so very much learning to consume that the choices are bewildering.  I've clearly learned more in the past two years of MOOCs than in almost 10 years of engineering and business college.  Try as I have, I haven't scratched the surface.  What is really needed is a way to chart a path and to understand in advance which MOOCs (or portions of MOOCs) will be most personally rewarding.

Higher Education Is Not a Mixtape

Higher Education Is Not a Mixtape | Free Education | Scoop.it
Will higher education go the way of music albums and cable TV? Is it inevitable that the Internet will break apart degrees and colleges? Some entrepreneurs think so. Fortunately, they are wrong.
David J MacFadyen's insight:

You can only connect the dots backwards.  You can't connect the dots if the dots haven;t yet appeared.  Desperate arguments that colleges and universities needn't change can't even see the changes needed to survive.  MOOCs and other forms of learning will facilitate life-success (employment, intellectual curiosity and satisfaction, and life-long-learning) as universities have not and cannot.  It will be obvious looking back.

It’s Never Too Late to Learn Infographic
Ever since the 19th century, when education was first standardized, learning in popular imagination is highly connected to age.
David J MacFadyen's insight:

This is great.  At age 75 I assure you that I've learned more (and taken more courses) since MOOCs emerged three years ago than I did in undergraduate school, and two master's.  Courses are simply much more convenient, available, and understandable.  And, they are free or ridiculously inexpensive.

Universities offering MOOCs doubled in 2014

Universities offering MOOCs doubled in 2014 | Free Education | Scoop.it
The number of massive open online courses continued to grow in 2014, and the number of universities offering them doubled.
David J MacFadyen's insight:

The process of acceptance of MOOC credentials will have many hills and valleys.   And, one of the ways entrenched interests always tries to stave off innovative challenges is to co-opt the challenge.  It is a predictable thing that Universities would try to take advantage of MOOCs to sustain their business model.  But, in the long run, it will be the best teachers preparing MOOCs, students taking them, and employers valuing them.  Some universities will adapt and play an important role.  Others won't.

Coding Bootcamps Emerge as Fast Tracks to 6 Figure Salaries - Mind/Shift

Coding Bootcamps Emerge as Fast Tracks to 6 Figure Salaries - Mind/Shift | Free Education | Scoop.it

"Marlon Frausto is in pursuit of the new American dream. Just a few weeks ago he left his job, in Hispanic marketing for the legal industry, and moved to San Francisco.

Every day he wakes at 5:30 a.m., commutes 45 minutes by train, and studies until 9 or 10 at night. He’s spending down his savings and says he’s getting help from “my loving family.”

At age 26, Frausto has gone back to school. Sort of. He’s enrolled in a brand-new kind of trade school: the immersive web-development program, also known as a “coder boot camp.” These programs promise, for several thousand dollars, to take people like Frausto and, in a manner of weeks, turn them into job-ready web developers."

Via John Evans
David J MacFadyen's insight:

Why are boot camps preferable to MOOC education? Structure, peer interaction, help with the soft side of employment, and perhaps job placement assistance.  How can these be provided to supplement MOOCs without a $ 12,000 cost to the student?

How Online Education Can Save You Money Infographic

How Online Education Can Save You Money Infographic
A college education is a must. While there are many brick-and-mortar institutions, a degree from one could cost you more in the end.
David J MacFadyen's insight:

Simple infographic to compare costs of Online, Public, and Private University costs.  MOOCs were conveniently omitted.  The challenge is to compare the value of the various forms of education.  If an education obtained from universities now is of more value than a MOOC education, it won't be for long.  Educating oneself by duplicating a university curriculum with MOOC study is probably a greater accomplishment than obtaining most college degrees.  Beyond knowledge, it demonstrates discipline, determination, and preparation for life-long-learning.

Tennessee is leading the way and, hopefully, the rest of the country will get onboard. In Tennessee, almost 90 percent of graduating high school seniors have signed up for its new universal community-college program.  While this article is somewhat unfocused, there is helpful information contained.

Attention refers to the capability of the brain to choose one aspect on which to concentrate while ignoring everything else in the environment.
David J MacFadyen's insight:

The less engaging the course the more difficult it is for students to hold their attention. And,

People do not pay attention when information is boring or presented in an uninteresting way.

Student reviews should help weed out those MOOCs that don’t recognize the above truths.  Data collected by the MOOC platforms will play a role, perhaps even a greater tole in improving attention-capture.

Ten percent of learning is from formal courses, twenty percent from your peers, and seventy percent is experiential.  Clearly, an employers desire to hire candidates with relevant experience is well founded.  And, while MOOCs are low-cost, they pale in comparison to gaining knowledge on the job and from your peers.  It isn't expensive -- in fact you are paid for obtaining that education.  And, the more you learn, the more you are paid.

Higher Education’s New Normal Infographic
Many things have changed in higher education over the past 3 decades.
David J MacFadyen's insight:

The new normal is clearly loaded with eLearning and we haven't adjusted to MOOCs (which aren't singled out in the infographic.) What would be interesting would be the 'next normal.' Will the basic courses, english, calculus, biology, physics, disappear from colleges and universities?  Will employer interest in specific educational content (such as a series of MOOCs) that result in in-depth, job relevant, knowledge acquisition) displace the BA or even the BS?  And, will students turn to those low-cost and sought-after credentials that a student can obtain to quickly start and shape their career success?

Excellent list, but I suspect that one was to obvious for inclusion: Greater speed in acquiring information -- I'll clarify after list included:

1. Big Data

2. Gamification

I strongly endorse 1,2,3,4,9, and 10.  Not on the list, is the emerging compression of information and its dissemination.  The infographic is a prime example, but so is the ability to watch lectures a 1.5X, 2X, and even faster.  Most students with whom I interact speed up lectures substantially, and emerging graphic representations provide potent trends in education.
