The Future of Education Infographic
50% of all Americans now own either a tablet or an eReader today.
79% of American households have a computer today.
75% of American households have Internet access at home today.
David J MacFadyen's insight:

Current higher-education students are and will increasingly rely on eLearning of all kinds to enhance their education.  But, the rate of change of higher education will accelerate even faster as the education technology literate grade schoolers and high schoolers move on to post-secondary education. Employers, Internet companies, and elegant learning platforms will lead the change.  Sadly, most traditional colleges and universities will suffer -- all the way to extinction -- while a few elite universities and professors benefit handsomely.

Will Free Online Courses Ever Replace a College Education? | Free Education | Scoop.it
Two years into their existence, MOOCs haven't stolen students away from brick-and-mortar universities. Instead, they've become a genre of their own.
David J MacFadyen's insight:

Good publicity for MOOCs.  The Atlantic takes an overview of HarvardX and notes the familiar pros and cons  The explosion of education resides not just at Harvard, Stanford, MIT, and Khan Academy, but throughout the entire eLearning movement, from a nugget ("how can I know if an egg is rotten?") to the series of online courses that prepares one for an occupation (“Supply Chain and Logistics Management.” is such a series from MIT.)

uTOP Inria's insight: (Open Education Europa, 10/06/2014) (Infographie : "MOOC supply and demand for web skills in Europe" http://t.co/EdGnEQZg77 via @scoopit)...
David J MacFadyen's insight:

The top 6 skills employers are seeking are: Web and app design, Domain-specific skills, Programming languages, Android, and iOS.  These are fastballs that MOOCs can hit out of the park.  Professionals consider MOOCs as the best way to prepare these skills, with on-the-job training close behind.  Only 15% of professionals consider Higher education to be the best way to prepare.  This European finding is telling for the future role of Higher education in career preparation.  This is the fundamental way that MOOCs will disrupt Higher education.  To the extent that Higher education is sought for employment and career purposes – and that is certainly a driver – students would be well advised to look elsewhere.  And, when a lifetime of debt is compared to the low-cost alternatives most students will make the obvious choice.  The debate within academia will wither along with the institutions.  It is just a matter of time and it will be a very short time.

David J MacFadyen's insight:

Unquestionably good news for many who lack access -- for a multitude of reasons -- to the on-campus experience.  As an insightful person pointed out, our educational system from Kindergarten, directs our learning and provides all sorts of external motivation.  Initially MOOC-educated will have incredible self-discipline and self-motivation.  Over time, mechanisms will evolve to provide them with the guidance, and later with the motivation needed.  The sequences of courses appearing under the rubric of 'certificate sequences' are the start of help in directing studies.  Some of the motivation will come from the growing acceptance of MOOC recognition by employers.  As with everything MOOC, the evolution will be rapid.

David J MacFadyen's insight:

This last decade of the music industry presages the coming decade of education. Choice is expanding at every level, from pre-k to graduate school.

Students are the big winners here. Decreased cost of content combined with increased competition among professors, and lower average ROI for universities per professor, will lead to lower tuition costs and greater choice.

Second tier institutions that cannot invest in talent or great content will find it harder to cover operating costs given downward pressure on tuition pricing. Those without endowments must change dramatically or go out of business.

The University of the People can now hand out degrees to its online students – but will employers take them seriously? (Will a degree made up of Moocs ever be worth the paper it's written on?
David J MacFadyen's insight:

It will depend on whether the information about skills gained are presented in a way that prospective employers can understand the fit to job requirements.  It can't possibly be less valuable than the degrees degrees now granted by for-profit, on-line universities.  The MOOC, and UoP mission is to educate you.  The mission of the for-profits (and most other private universities) is to get as much of your money as possible.

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have opened new doors for free online learning that lends itself well to ICT-related subjects.
David J MacFadyen's insight:

Student preference for MOOC education in the top skills employers are seeking is the message.  Employers and students will increasingly move away from colleges and universities for career learning.   Perhaps a similar infographic for the US would be much like the situation in EU.  Except the US has about a year longer MOOC history funding and evolution.  Watch the blinding shift from degrees to skills and experience as employer preference.

The college degree will fade in importance.  Until it does, such low-cost, MOOC assisted, degree granting schools will proliferate.  When employers focus on job seekers with needed skills (versus degree holders that still need substantial training) the shift to concepts such as Open Badges will accelerate.  In the meantime, many ways for students to avoid life-long-debt will emerge.
