Mooc students ‘passive’, study suggests

Mooc students ‘passive’, study suggests | Free Education | Scoop.it
Research finds Harvard course cohort had high hopes, but avoided collaboration and failed to use new skills at work (Mooc students ‘passive’, study suggests | News | Times Higher Education http://t.co/8ColJNfZCD)...
David J MacFadyen's insight:

A slightly discouraging outcome, but the conclusion isn't that MOOCs don't work, but that they must be made better.  Not surprising when one considers that the challenge cites is 'displacing traditional colleges.'  That would be a lofty goal of a two-year experiment in displacing a concept of education that has been around and evolving for more than two centuries.

How to Get a Computer Science Education with 20 MOOCs for Free - Computer Science Zone | Free Education | Scoop.it
With job outlooks for computer scientists projected to grow into the 2020s, demand for students of computer science is skyrocketing. Compound that demand with inflated college tuition and the increased availability of competitive coding bootcamps, and we can also expect the cost of bachelor’s degrees in the subject to skyrocket over the next several years
David J MacFadyen's insight:
The only thing missing is a big advertising, marketing, and sales budget. No student should spend thousands of dollars. Often borrowed, to get a second or third rate education. A better education is available for free and you can be earning while gaining the education.

Social learning has been in existence for ages now. Inherently, man’s basic desire is to observe, learn, and share.
David J MacFadyen's insight:

A defining and differentiating feature of educational technology is the evaluative element that has grown from our attitude about technical advance. We evaluate, assess, and improve.  Clearly, assessing improvements in learning outcomes has not been central to higher education.  It will take a while, but widespread recognition of the superiority of MOOCs  over traditional university education will take time.
