What’s Up with MOOCs? 20 Burning Questions Answered | Free Education | Scoop.it
Confused about what all this MOOC talk is all about? Not sure what it means for eLearning? Here are answers to 20 questions that might help clear things up.
David J MacFadyen's insight:

These questions and answers are a fascinating overview of MOOCs.  It is surprising that the person providing the answers has never taken a MOOC.  His crisp, insightful answers are some that I'll put away to answer the same or similar questions.  When asked, I tend to rant on.  But, as a devoted taker of MOOCs I perhaps am a little more excited.

Can you really pack a two-year, $250,000-curriculum in a single book?
David J MacFadyen's insight:

The author looks at the Curricula of top business schools, including Kellogg, Harvard, Stanford, and Stern.  And, it is an irreverent look.  It would be great if he had developed a curriculum from available MOOCs, many from the same schools.

Udacity Will No Longer Offer Free Certificates – Wired Campus - Blogs - The Chronicle of Higher Education | Free Education | Scoop.it
David J MacFadyen's insight:

This was both inevitable, and a good move toward MOOC credentials carrying the weight that they rightfully should in the employment space.  Students will pay relatively little, and the value of MOOC credentials will increasingly play an important role on resumes and personal profiles.  Watch for other MOOC platforms to follow suit.

The school made its first move into the digital educational realm with a $1,500 online program of three fundamental business courses for undergraduates and recent graduates.
David J MacFadyen's insight:

What a deal, for Harvard, for the students, and for the MOOC platform.  Students will get a great credential and Harvard will share $3,000,000 with the MOOC platform, presumably EdX.  Money is starting to flow to online education and it will continue to be an incredible deal.

Ireland can play major role in online education revolution - Independent.ie | Free Education | Scoop.it
IRELAND has the chance to be at the centre of an online education revolution if our third-level system champions a glaring opportunity to teach the world.
David J MacFadyen's insight:

Interesting take on training value of MOOCs: MOOCs significantly reduce the inevitable time delay between identifying the immediate requirements of industry and meeting them with trained lecturers and appropriate courses.

This time gap is a major challenge for industry. Traditionally, by the time businesses communicate their needs to academic institutions, the institutions develop courses, find suitably qualified lecturers and the students complete the courses, up to seven years can have lapsed.

Education Department data show associate- and certificate-program graduates face low salaries and high debt.
David J MacFadyen's insight:

Clearly MOOCs are the future of career training.  Students are horribly misled when they borrow tens of thousands for educations that don't improve their earning capacity.  "72 percent (of Associates and Certificates) offered by for-profits produce graduates who earn less than high school dropouts. (The comparable figure for programs at public institutions is 32 percent.)"

David J MacFadyen's insight:

There is not much to say about current attitudes of higher education institutions about MOOCs.  Historically, negatively impacted folks tend to underestimate disruptive innovation.  In total, it is surprising if this infographic is representative of the entire higher education establishment.  I suspect a poll of those institutions that will be crippled or wiped-out by changes in education would answer much more negatively.

By taking massive stores of data and removing most nuance and complexity, researchers examining Udacity, edX, Google Course Builder, and Khan Academy conclusively demonstrate the obvious: that effort in online courses predicts achievement.
David J MacFadyen's insight:

I sincerely hope that this article is written in jest.  With the finding that those who try do better than those that don't we should be embarrassed for the authors.  But, the writer at least had a sense of humor:

"Reich's Law of Doing Stuffstudents who do stuff in a MOOC or other online learning environment will, on average, do more stuff than those who don't do stuff, and students who do stuff will perform better on stuff than those who don't do stuff."

European Commission launches network to foster web talent through Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) | Free Education | Scoop.it
David J MacFadyen's insight:

Web-related industry is generating more economic growth than any other part of the European economy, but hundreds of thousands of jobs remain unfilled due to the lack of qualified staff.

Neelie Kroes, responsible for the Digital Agenda, said::

"By 2020, 90% of jobs will need digital skills. That is just around the corner, and we aren’t ready! Already businesses in Europe are facing a shortage of skilled ICT workers. We have to fill that gap, and this network we are launching will help us identify where the gaps are. This goes hand in hand with the work being done through the Grand Coalition for Digital Jobs".
