Donald Clark Plan B: MOOCs: Coursera moves towards massive revenues on certification | Free Education | Scoop.it
David J MacFadyen's insight:

The inevitable is being recognized.  Looking back at yesterday's post, Harvard is offering basic business education to about 2,000 students at $ 1,500 each.  That is a tidy $3,000,000 -- plenty for the university and MOOC platform to split, and a hell of a deal for the lucky 2000.

What My Free MOOC BA Might Mean for Tomorrow's College Kids | Free Education | Scoop.it
So how might what I learned during my One Year MOOC BA help students and parents staring down huge college tuition bills in the coming years?
David J MacFadyen's insight:

If your goal is learning rather than credentialization, the ability to put together your own college-level learning experience for free is here today.

As more businesses benefit by hiring the disciplined, motivated, knowledgeable, MOOC-educated, we'll see the shift accelerate from a residential degree taking four years, to the self-certified equivalent requiring 9 months and producing a more desirable employee.

Big Data MOOC Research Breakthrough: Learning Activities Lead to Achievement

Big Data MOOC Research Breakthrough: Learning Activities Lead to Achievement | Free Education | Scoop.it
By taking massive stores of data and removing most nuance and complexity, researchers examining Udacity, edX, Google Course Builder, and Khan Academy conclusively demonstrate the obvious: that effort in online courses predicts achievement.
David J MacFadyen's insight:

I sincerely hope that this article is written in jest.  With the finding that those who try do better than those that don't we should be embarrassed for the authors.  But, the writer at least had a sense of humor:

"Reich's Law of Doing Stuffstudents who do stuff in a MOOC or other online learning environment will, on average, do more stuff than those who don't do stuff, and students who do stuff will perform better on stuff than those who don't do stuff."

European Commission launches network to foster web talent through Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) | Free Education | Scoop.it
David J MacFadyen's insight:

Web-related industry is generating more economic growth than any other part of the European economy, but hundreds of thousands of jobs remain unfilled due to the lack of qualified staff.

Neelie Kroes, responsible for the Digital Agenda, said::

"By 2020, 90% of jobs will need digital skills. That is just around the corner, and we aren’t ready! Already businesses in Europe are facing a shortage of skilled ICT workers. We have to fill that gap, and this network we are launching will help us identify where the gaps are. This goes hand in hand with the work being done through the Grand Coalition for Digital Jobs".

A great read.  I expected to read about entrepreneurship courses at Stanford, U MD, MIT and elsewhere as it was written by the head of a British entrepreneurship academic program.  Surprisingly, he chose a MOOC on Shakespeare's Hamlet.  And, his positive experience was similar to mine, even though mine includes taking virtually every every entrepreneurship MOOC offered.

MOOC Learners: Who They Are, What Motivates Them

MOOC Learners: Who They Are, What Motivates Them | Free Education | Scoop.it
Lately, I've noticed that much of the discussion around massive open online courses (MOOCs) has focused almost exclusively on one point: Completion rates, or those students who achieve a certificate in a particular course. While this data point, borr...

Via Ramón Talavera
David J MacFadyen's insight:

Paying for the completion certificate increases completion rates from 50% to 60%.  That is a 20% increase,  Is there something fundamentally different about the learners?  Do those that pay have an intent to use the certificate in a different way?  Or. are they just more affluent?

Ramón Talavera's curator insight, March 13, 8:44 AM

I'm totally agree with Dr. Agarwal. Completion rates can't define MOOCs success. The diversity of students ages 8 to 95 who register in a course is just one important example that must be considered when analyzing the success or not of this new educational approach.

I invite you to check my blog to read my own experience using MOOCs  http://moocstream.blogspot.com

Ireland can play major role in online education revolution - Independent.ie | Free Education | Scoop.it
IRELAND has the chance to be at the centre of an online education revolution if our third-level system champions a glaring opportunity to teach the world.
David J MacFadyen's insight:

Interesting take on training value of MOOCs: MOOCs significantly reduce the inevitable time delay between identifying the immediate requirements of industry and meeting them with trained lecturers and appropriate courses.

This time gap is a major challenge for industry. Traditionally, by the time businesses communicate their needs to academic institutions, the institutions develop courses, find suitably qualified lecturers and the students complete the courses, up to seven years can have lapsed.
