MOOCs and their discontents

MOOCs and their discontents | Free Education | Scoop.it

The MOOC may succeed or fail, but it is essential to remember that its existence constitutes an experiment, an experiment that comes in many incarnations, and one that after many deaths and rebirths will, for better or for worse, make its mark on the educational system that so many of us long to reform and change.

Online Training is Green Infographic
Everyone is trying to save money and help the environment. But did you know that eLearning saves not only the the environment, but money and increases learner’s content retention!
David J MacFadyen's insight:

It hadn't occurred to me that eLearning has positive environmental impact.  Is there really any aspect of learning in which eLearning doesn't excel, including learning outcomes?  Perhaps the green aspect of eLearning will merely be the frosting on the cake as the powerful knowledge dissemination will make many of us more environmentally conscious and  equip us to do something about the environmental problems we face.

David J MacFadyen's insight:

Interesting article, but the author may have missed the boat entirely.  It is nice to be benevolent, but there is a commercial opportunity to drive online learning that dwarfs other purposes of learning.  Employment will be the driver of learning, and eLearning will play a greater and greater role in recruiting, career development, retention, and every other aspect of employment.

How to Build a Better Digital Book

How to Build a Better Digital Book | Free Education | Scoop.it
It was, she remembered, the first standing ovation she ever received as a librarian.
Laura Fleming was working at an elementary school in River Edge, New Jersey, a tiny, suburban school district across the river from Manhattan.
David J MacFadyen's insight:

Amazing that books have moved slowly to take advantage of digital potential.  Here is a discussion of children's books with some exciting digital extensions.  I've long desired technical books that did such things as hold an illustration visible while it was the subject of the text, interactive calculations that would allow in depth consideration as the reader considered the implications, etc.

The Value of Organizational Learning Infographic
How do you gauge the business impact of organizational learning programs? What are the main obstacles encountered when linking learning programs and business outcomes?
David J MacFadyen's insight:

As the lines blur between school, work, entertainment, and leisure, no single 'model' will be a one-for-one replacement of the institutions and organizational arrangements we have today. Hiring people to educate them will be one concept. Consider this scenario: hire an employee to increase diversity, match them with a mentor as an assistant (or apprentice), expect them to be productive 75% of the time and in targeted training 25% of the time.  In less than 6 months you would probably have an employee well-suited for their job and the company would reap the benefits diversity brings.

Most importantly, the employee would not accumulate school debt that might be a lifetime constraint.

Eighty percent of learning takes place through on-the-job interactions with peers, experts, and managers, according to Bersin and Associates.
David J MacFadyen's insight:

Seminar providers are finding it harder and harder to sell their services. This infographic won't be encouraging. Learning from each other is clearly powerful, but I'd love to see the infographic of learning together the content that needs to be learned by all -- that instance where needed learning isn't already mastered by a peer.  Not only can we learn more faster now, but our rate of improvement as learners is increasing.

Can Starbucks Salvage the American Dream?

Can Starbucks Salvage the American Dream? | Free Education | Scoop.it
What it's actually like to pay your way through college as a barista.
David J MacFadyen's insight:

There is too much to say about Arizona State University's "credit for MOOCs" initiative.  Starbuck's support for employees finishing their degrees in certainly one thing.

One advantage of a MOOC education is that grade inflation does not benefit the provider.  Many college degrees are virtually worthless, or hazardous to your career! Why? Because most colleges hesitate to flunk non-performers and forfeit the collection of additional tuition and fees.  Perhaps it is heresy to expect MOOC learning to be more rigorous than traditional colleges, so call me a heretic.

How to Master Microlearning Infographic
The Fortune 500 and other cutting-edge companies are using microlearning to change the way they approach training and development.
David J MacFadyen's insight:

Somewhat off the MOOC theme of delivering full higher-education type courses, micro-learning is often task or issue specific.  Everywhere, information is becoming more compressed.  Infographics, word clouds, video clips, and the ability to run audio at higher speeds (I like 2x with closed caption enabled) all deliver information quickly.  Making information available for the specific task at hand allows us to gain needed information and apply it immediately. We will see this trend continue indefinitely. Knowledge workers face an ever increasing need for life-long-learning and it is needed at an increasing rate.

How do you measure the ‘success’ of a MOOC?

How do you measure the ‘success’ of a MOOC? | Free Education | Scoop.it
Here’s a question I’ve been battling for some time .. how do you measure the ‘success’ of a MOOC? The problem is that I haven’t been able to define what the ‘success’ is supposed to be, so to try and measure it seems, well, a pointless exercise.
David J MacFadyen's insight:

Each measurement suggested is indeed a measure of success.  There isn't one measure. Personally, I've finished dozens of MOOCs and have been successful by most measures. For the dozens that I haven't done all homework, quizzes, team projects, and forum participation, I've gained what I wanted and consider most a success because I got what I wanted from the course.  Every individual has a purpose with every MOOC.  No single, or universal measure would apply for me. Surely no small set of measures would suffice for the tens of millions of MOOC students.  Big Data, generating representative personas, segmenting the students will allow providers with success measures that will serve to continually improve MOOCs.

Millions of America’s young people are really struggling financially. Around 30 percent are living with their parents, and many others are coping with stagnant wages, underemployment, and sky-high rent.
David J MacFadyen's insight:

unless we disrupt higher education and provide better, more cheaply (read that as widespread adoption of MOOCs,) home ownership will be for the very few children of ultra-rich parents.  Crippling college debt is already impacting marriage, childbearing, home ownership, business formation, and other activities dependent upon personal financial circumstances.  How can we put a quick end to the college rip-off of exorbitant student debt, useless degrees -- for many of the 50% that achieve any degree for their indebtedness.

Why Pay When You Can Get The MBA For Free?

Why Pay When You Can Get The MBA For Free? | Free Education | Scoop.it
Coursera’s homepage
The University of Illinois’ College of Business at Urbana-Champaign did the unthinkable this week. It agreed to put the entire MBA curriculum of a new and innovative program online for free.
David J MacFadyen's insight:

Do you want the piece of parchment paper that no one ever asks for anyway? If not, you can take the complete MBA degree in 18 or more separate courses at no cost whatsoever. So the big question is why wouldn’t students just take the program for free, put it on their resume, and say—very justifiably—that they have an MBA education? Believe me, they will.  Employers do and will increasingly measure the results obtained by each new hire and value those hires based on their contribution to company success rather than on academic credentials.

There is no question that elite schools, through their admissions process, act as a filter.  Employers can somewhat rely on employee quality by recruiting from the elite universities.  Evolving recruitment strategies will find ways to assess potential hires who claim preparation by means other than attending those universities.  Testing will help with skills assessment. Ways to judge soft skills will improve, but most of all, success in the work place will be the credential for advancement or moving to a new employer.

David J MacFadyen's insight:

Unavoidably we compare MOOCs to extant resources and institutions, Universities, seminars, corporate training, etc.  In fact MOOCs are no more similar to the university experience than an iPhone is similar to a WalkMan. You can only connect the dots looking back.  None of us can see the future clearly. Corporate and employee acceptance of MOOC education for life-long-learning and career advancement is well on the up ramp of adoption curve. The future won't map one-to-one with the past. MOOCs will modify so many things with unexpected consequences that predictions are impossible, but fun to do.  Most institutions threatened by MOOCs will in fact fall victim to them simply because MOOCs have the overwhelming exonomic advantage.
