Internet Archive Forums: Over 1 Million Digital Books Now Available Free to the Print-Disabled | OER Resources: open ebooks & OER resources for open educations & research | Scoop.it
More than doubling the number of books available to print disabled people of all ages, today the Internet Archive launched a new service that brings free access to more than 1 million books — from classic 19th century fiction and current novels to technical guides and research materials — now available in the specially designed format to support those who are blind, dyslexic or are otherwise visually impaired.

“Every person deserves the opportunity to enhance their lives through access to the books that teach, entertain and inspire,” said Brewster Kahle, founder and Digital Librarian of the Internet Archive. “Bringing access to huge libraries of books to the blind and print disabled is truly one of benefits of the digital revolution.”

Perhaps ‘Open’ Is a Flag of My Disposition… | e-Literate

Perhaps ‘Open’ Is a Flag of My Disposition… | e-Literate | OER Resources: open ebooks & OER resources for open educations & research | Scoop.it
Anyone who went to EDUCAUSE this year had to come away with the impression that Open is the new black. This product now comes with 50% more openness! That one’s openness is 99.44% pure! It’s easy to get jaded about all of this and cry “openwashing,” as Anya Kamenetz did, among others (including me, at times). But while it’s perfectly appropriate to hold vendors accountable for hype, it’s also important to look carefully at the announcements beneath the hype. Because they are not all the same. I proudly serve on the Sakai Foundation Board of Directors and proudly provide all content on this blog under a Creative Commons license, but I also recognize that there are different kinds of “open”—and different kinds of “free”—vendors can provide that have different kinds and levels of utility.

Case in point: The respective announcements by Pearson and Blackboard last week reflect very different ideas of both “open” and “free.” Those differences matter. If we simply throw up our hands and declare the use of these words by all for-profit entities as meaningless marketing babble, then we will miss some valuable information.

Findings Is New Tool For Discovering, Curating And Sharing Your Content And Clips From The Web | Mashable | OER Resources: open ebooks & OER resources for open educations & research | Scoop.it

The act of highlighting a noteworthy passage in an ebook is being socialized by Findings, an online destination where readers can collect, share, discuss and discover such highlights from ebooks and web texts.

Findings’ creators, the folks at startup incubator Betaworks, refer to their creation as a “social commonplace book,” and “a platform for sharing and discovering what people are reading.”

The Findings experience is centered around shared passages and user libraries. Libraries are like digital bookshelves and consist of all the texts — with highlights and quotes automatically organized by book, source or author — the user has clipped from...

Read On: Reading Life, Social Reading: mitmachen bei der Lese-Revolution! | OER Resources: open ebooks & OER resources for open educations & research | Scoop.it

Read On!

College Open Textbooks

College Open Textbooks | OER Resources: open ebooks & OER resources for open educations & research | Scoop.it

Funded by The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, College Open Textbooks is a collection of colleges, governmental agencies, education non-profits, and other education-related organizations that are focused on the mission of driving the awareness and advocacy for open textbooks. This includes providing training for instructors adopting open resources, peer reviews of open textbooks, and mentoring online professional networks that provide support to authors who open their resources. Through our community outreach, we have found that open textbooks should be:

easy to use, get and pass around,

editable so instructors can customize content,

cross-platform compatible,

printable,

and accessible so they work with adaptive technology.

(thanks to Daniel Spielmann for this suggestion!)

iPad 101: Get Your Free ePub eBooks at Project Gutenberg | TiPb

iPad 101: Get Your Free ePub eBooks at Project Gutenberg | TiPb | OER Resources: open ebooks & OER resources for open educations & research | Scoop.it
If you’re not already familiar with the geeky details, ePub is the open, free-flowing eBook format that Apple is using for iBooks. However, let’s caveat that “open” piece — ePub books bought from the iBookstore will be using Apple’s FairPlay DRM (digital rights management) which means that while ePub is a widely supported format, Apple ePub books won’t work on other devices, and ePub books using other DRM (like Adobe Content Server) won’t work on the iPad. Headache, right? Well, the good news is DRM-free ePub eBooks — like those from Project Gutenberg — should work on the iPad and pretty much everything else.
To use Project Gutenberg, just click on the link above and browse or search away. If you’re not sure where to start, try their Top 100 list. When you find something you like, scroll down to the EPUB link and download the file.

how to find, use, create and share OER resources and open ebooks? | OER Resources: open ebooks & OER resources for open educations & research | Scoop.it

The Bibliothek used to be a labyrinth ...

... the very old books used to be chaned with a metal catena and the former books could not be described as "portable" :-)

... since the invention of paperbacks is is usable to carry books around, read in a train ...

... but the actual revolution in publishing, sharing and producing books and other documents in the social web ... brings a complete new handling with books, words, literature, culture ...

.. and is is important to experiment with new form of production, distribution and receptions of books.

I want to share and explore new forms of reading, writing, speaking, commenting, linking, sharing and distributing of "texts", which also means interactive and "living" hypermedia files ...

.. a lot of  projects files and books will be in english, but i will also have o look on german resources ... so my language will be english and german, sorry for my ugly english ...

A Minimal Glimpse of Philip Glass

A Minimal Glimpse of Philip Glass | OER Resources: open ebooks & OER resources for open educations & research | Scoop.it
When director David Hillman Curtis and cinematographer Ben Wolf paid a visit recently to composer Philip Glass to film a promotional piece for the Brooklyn Academy of Music, they were granted just 30 minutes. “He was booked solid the day we visited his offices and actually was being followed by a minder who sat on the couch just out of the frame checking his watch,” said Curtis. “I’ve become a pretty good interviewer and was able to loosen Mr. Glass up a bit and he took it from there, giving a great interview, and we were done in 30 minutes.” In the resulting two-minute film, Glass expresses amusement over his recent fascination with classical music. “Where are my frontiers,” asks the composer, whose work is frequently described as avant-garde? “My frontiers are actually not in front of me. BioBook – eText evolved | News Center | Wake Forest University

BioBook – eText evolved | News Center | Wake Forest University | OER Resources: open ebooks & OER resources for open educations & research | Scoop.it

What started as an idea for an iPad application evolved into a more accessible tool for the next generation of electronic textbooks, which Johnson and Macosko call “BioBook.” BioBook was created within a Moodle-based learning management system designed by Odigia. Moodle is a free, open-source Web application that educators can use to create online learning sites. “Students can access BioBook from desktop PCs, laptops, iPads and mobile devices,” said Johnson.

The research and development of BioBook are funded by a $249,348 grant from Next Generation Learning Challenges, a program run by Educause and financed largely by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Steven Johnson Unveils A Twitter-like Network For Sharing Long Reads | Co. Design | OER Resources: open ebooks & OER resources for open educations & research | Scoop.it
Findings.com will be a wonderland for geeky literati, allowing them to share clippings from longer pieces with your social network.
As a daily writer and reader, I can't live without Twitter: I get story ideas there, I drum up freelance work there, I get inspired and educated there. But man, that 140-character limit is a bitch sometimes. And let's face it--in Twitter's big tent, there's a helluva lot of noise. What if there were something like Twitter, but populated solely with unabridged snippets of interesting books, articles, and essays? Findings.com is exactly that: Instead of exchanging hashtagged brain farts and link-shortened headlines, users can post full-length quotations from whatever literary source they like (provided it's electronic).

Is The Internet Turning Books Into Perpetual Works-in-Progress? | The New Republic

Is The Internet Turning Books Into Perpetual Works-in-Progress? | The New Republic | OER Resources: open ebooks & OER resources for open educations & research | Scoop.it
Scholars for generations have issued second and third and fourth editions of texts to renovate outdated information. And some authors of fiction have even capitalized on the opportunity presented by new editions to modernize anachronisms. When F. Paul Wilson’s 1984 novel The Tomb was reissued in 2004, Wilson swapped mentions of a “VCR” for “DVD player” and removed a comment about Johnny Carson, who had since retired from The Tonight Show.

A far more sinister example is the Great Soviet Encyclopedia, notoriously manipulated by Communist ideologues. In the 1950s, after the downfall of Lavrenti Beria, Stalin’s chief of secret police, all encyclopedia owners were instructed to remove the “Beria” entry from the book and replace it with an expanded article about the Bering Strait.
But the difference with e-books, of course, is the speed and the ease of revision. The e-book of The Devil’s Light in which bin Laden is dead was released just months after the hardcover in which bin Laden is alive and scheming; the paperback, which will also include Patterson’s changes, won’t be released until 2012. This likely explains why—judging by the large assortment of updated Kindle editions currently available on Amazon—e-books seem to have prompted a new enthusiasm for tweaking content after publicatio
