We are excited to announce that along with the planned upgrade to SP13 this evening from 10:00 p.m. ET through 5:00 a.m. ET on Friday, June 21st, we are adding a new solution to CourseSites -- Blackboard xpLor. Blackboard xpLor is a global learning object repository that enables educators to easily author, copyright, share, and discover rich educational materials. With the addition of the basic Blackboard xpLor, CourseSites will be connected to a universe of educational content, including Khan Academy lessons, shared as open educational resources. As CourseSites Instructors, you will be able to leverage and contribute to this repository directly from within your course environments.

- practical tools that can be used to develop that aspect of a MOOC
- practical tips on how to be successful

You are invited to contribute. If you participated in a MOOC, add a paragraph describing your experience (you can sign your name to it, so we know it's a personal story). If you know of resources or can add information about an element of MOOC theory, add to or edit the text that already exists. If you know of tools, provide a link to the tool, a short description, and your assessment of the tool.
If you have a tip, add the tip.

The European Commission will publish a Communication on Opening up Education which aims to stimulate high-quality, innovative ways of learning and teaching through digital technologies and content. By making learning environments more open and delivering quality education more efficiently, the EU will create a better skilled workforce which will boost jobs, competitiveness and growth.
Opening up Education proposes measures at EU and national levels, including helping learning institutions, teachers and students of all ages to acquire digital skills and new learning methods. The initiative also seeks to support the development and availability of open educational resources.

Open Educational Resources (OER) and Open Educational Practices (OEP) are making an evergrowing impact on the field of adult learning, offering free high-quality education to increasing numbers of people. However, the top-down distribution of weighty university courses that typifies current provision is not necessarily suitable for contexts such as Continued Professional Development (CPD). This article proposes that a change of focus from a supplier-driven to a needs-led approach, grounded in theories of informal learning, could increase the positive impact of OER and OEP beyond the ivory towers of higher education.
The extremely rapid expansion of open educational resource (OER) initiatives and the millions of learners they attract can be understood as an indicator of an emerging revolution in education and learning. This article describes recent developments in this area and develops conceptual foundations for studies and policies on OER. We describe four different types of OER, locate these in a field of learning theories, and discuss how the wide adoption of OER may constrain and accelerate the transformation of learning and education in the knowledge society.
... the critical work that librarians do to support OER adoption at community colleges. This webinar will feature three projects where librarians are leading the way in searching, curating, and creating OER to expand student access and improve teaching practices.
The RCUK policy can be summarized as follows (quoting Peter Suber's SPARC Open Access Newsletter, issue #165): RCUK-funded authors 'must' publish in RCUK-compliant journals. A journal is RCUK-compliant if it offers ...
