Federal Register | Findings of Research Misconduct

This post links to the actual report of research misconduct by Dr. Michael Miller, former chair of Neuroscience and Physiology, SUNY, by the Office of Research Integrity.

The summary of the findings is that Miller in a number of cases falsified images to make it appear that alcohol exposure during fetal development had a greater effect than it actually did.

Miller has agreed to "exclude himself voluntarily from any contracting or subcontracting with any agency of the United States Government and from eligibility or involvement in nonprocurement programs of the United States Government" and to "have his research supervised for a period of two (2) years immediately following the one (1) year period of exclusion". He is also prohibited from "serving in any advisory capacity to PHS including, but not limited to, service on any PHS advisory committee, board, and/or peer review committee, or as a consultant for a period of three (3) years, beginning on February 6, 2012."

Penalized Former SUNY Professor “neither admits nor denies committing research misconduct.” | Fraud in Medical Research | Scoop.it

The federal Office of Research Integrity has found that a former professor at the State University of New York’s Upstate Medical University engaged in research misconduct in articles financed with grants from the National Institutes of Health, including the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. According to a notice to be published on Monday in the Federal Register, Michael W. Miller, a former professor and chair of the university’s department of neuroscience and physiology, used falsified data in four federal grant applications, along with two published papers and one manuscript submitted to a journal for publication. The papers, published in 2007 and 2009, were retracted in January. The former professor has agreed to voluntarily exclude himself from contract work for any government agency for one year, and to have his research supervised for two years afterward. Mr. Miller “neither admits nor denies committing research misconduct,” according to the notice.
