Olympic Gourmet: Team Kazakhstan's Secret Weapon Will Be Their Horsemeat Sausages | The Atlantic | Fran Jurga: Equestrian Sport News | Scoop.it
The Kazakh national squads are bringing horse delicacies that might be tough to find in London.

Click on the big bold headline at the top to read this article.

@FranJurga writes: Is Borat covering the Olympics? He could've written this article except this is not satire, it's real: The Atlantic is reporting that Team Kazakhstan will bring its own supply of horsemeat delicacies--and a stash of caviar--to London for their athletes' diets.

They believe their horsemeat sausages will be their secret weapon.

How will they get it through customs?

Olympic Fashion: The Well-dressed Dutch Team | KNHS Ermelo

Olympic Fashion: The Well-dressed Dutch Team | KNHS Ermelo | Fran Jurga: Equestrian Sport News | Scoop.it

@FranJurga writes: It's fun to see the teams get "kitted out". This week the Dutch Olympic equestrian team took possession of its royal blue jackets and posed for this terrific photo at the same time.

What, not orange?

Actually, their pants can be orange or white and here you see that the fashion-standout Anky van Grunsven (and defending Olympic gold medalist) donned her Olympics-issue orange trenchcoat.

The team had tailors on hand to make sure everything fit properly.

The white piping on the jackets modeled by Adelinde Cornelissen (right, front) was optional for the men, presumably. It's a Great Gatsby look, to be sure, as are the v-neck vests, as modeled by Edward Gal at left.

These are the "uniforms" they will wear at the opening ceremony.

Jacob Melissen is the photographer of this official team photo.

"UK armed forces are on standby to provide an additional 3,500 troops for Olympic security, amid fears private contractor G4S will be unable to provide enough staff, the BBC learns."

@FranJurga writes (with tongue in cheek): Perhaps they will call up the Household Cavalry mounted unit and King's Troop horse-drawn artillery to protect the equestrian events at Greenwich Park.

We can hope, anyway...

Olympic Dressage: Japan's Hiroshi Hoketsu Trains in Germany | DW.DE | Fran Jurga: Equestrian Sport News | Scoop.it

"Hiroshi Hoketsu from Japan qualified for the dressage event at the Summer Olympics in London. The 71-year-old is the oldest Olympic contestant and trains in Germany."

@franjurga writes: But wait, there's more! I loved this article.  It really gives some depth to Hiroshi--far beyond the "oldest" badge he has worn. And it puts his journey to London in perspective, both by mentioning his horse's lameness and by explaining why he will be the only dressage rider from Japan, thanks to last year's tragedies at home.

I think he deserves a special medal!

Olympic Eventing: Zara Phillips, Nicola Wilson + Mary King's Fun Photo Booth Session | Daily Mail UK | Fran Jurga: Equestrian Sport News | Scoop.it

@FranJurga writes: Zara Phillips took time out from her Olympics training schedule to collect her kit yesterday - and managed to spare a few minutes to goof around in an Adidas photobooth.

@FranJurga writes: Sure, like you've never done it? Goofed off with friends in one of those photo booths at a wedding or reunion?

And then your cousin had to post the photos on Facebook, and tag you, to boot?

That's what happened to three riders on Team GB's Olympic Eventing squad yesterday. Zara Phillips, Nicola Wilson and Mary King proved once again that eventers just want to have fun.

You don't often see Zara without makeup and a mission. I bet this photo will do nothing but up her popularity with the people.

Olympic Jumping: Lamaze Will Stick with Inexperienced Derly Chin for London Gold Medal Defense | Calgary Herald | Fran Jurga: Equestrian Sport News | Scoop.it

"The feeling on Saturday at Spruce Meadows was one of concern, thus leading to widespread foreboding. When Eric Lamaze and his Olympic-nominated horse Derly Chin de Muze stalled at a jump, for the second time in six days, questions circled as to whether the Canadian team brain trust would opt for the other possible candidate, Verdi, for the London Games."

@FranJurga writes: Canada's Eric Lamaze has a  ghost horse riding with him at London in the show jumping. He will be defending his Olympic Gold Medal won in 2008 with his dear departed Hickstead. Olympic Might-Have-Been: Sjef Janssen Speaks Out on His Future with Totilas and Matthias Rath | Welt.de | Fran Jurga: Equestrian Sport News | Scoop.it

@FranJurga writes: this transcript of an interview with Dutch Dressage Team Coach Sjef Janssen is not about Olympic dressage. But it is about the horse whose shadow will be cast over the Olympic Dressage.

The horse who won't be there.

The interview is a bit confrontational--on both sides--and the photos aren't all flattering.

Totilas is often portrayed as the ideal. The new standard. He is the horse to which others will be compared.

Olympic Predictions: Britain, US hope to knock Germany from podium in equestrian | Washington Post | Fran Jurga: Equestrian Sport News | Scoop.it
Queen Elizabeth II will be following this Olympic event, maybe even in person. Same for U.S. presidential contender Mitt Romney.

@FranJurga writes: Here's an Associated Press article that will surely show up in newspapers and on news web sites around the nation.

The writer believes that Germany will not be much of a factor in the three Olympic events and taps the US and Great Britain to de-throne them.

They even go so far as to offer a list of medal predictions, of which the eventing is especially interesting.

Maybe they've never heard of Michael Jung...or Australia?

Medal predictions are always tricky but I suppose that now we are done predicting team members, it's time to start speculating on who'll be standing on the podium.
