Olympic Veterinarian: Brendan Furlong is overseeing Olympic horses for the fifth--and last--time | NJ.com | Fran Jurga: Equestrian Sport News | Scoop.it

@FranJurga writes: This will be veterinarian Dr. Brendan Furlong’s fifth and last Olympic Games. In this Q and A with USEF's Joanie Morris, he recalls some memorable moments in his time with the US eventing team.

Dr Furlong cleared one big hurdle this morning when Team USA's horses cleared the first veterinary inspection. But that's just the first of many hurdles to come over the next four days.

Congratulations to Dr. Furlong, and thanks!

Olympic Insects: French Beauty Firm Moved Greenwich Park's Honeybees to Safety on Rooftop During Games | Metro UK

Olympic Insects: French Beauty Firm Moved Greenwich Park's Honeybees to Safety on Rooftop During Games | Metro UK | Fran Jurga: Equestrian Sport News | Scoop.it

The apiaries at Greenwich Park, home to 50,000 bees, are currently empty. Not because the bees have fled the colony, but because they’re holidaying in Covent Garden.

Until November, the Greenwich Park bees have been relocated to ensure their health and wellbeing while the park plays host to Olympic events.

@FranJurga writes: This might be one of my favorite stories about the transformation of Greenwich Park for the Olympics. I'm sure this is just a taster...there must be a great story here, and the freelancer in me longs to pursue it!

Honeybees are far from trivial, and it makes sense that the 1000 or so acres of Greenwich Park, as well as the extensive flower and rose gardens, would require the services of thousands of bees.

It also makes sense that their routine would have been disrupted by the construction in the Park.

This article is heavy on the PR side but I think this French firm, Melvita, did a wonderful deed and hope to learn more. I do know that the firm does normally keep bees atop its London store, and that they sell the honey!

Please contact me if you know more! Thanks!
