Olympic Veterinarian: Brendan Furlong is overseeing Olympic horses for the fifth--and last--time | NJ.com | Fran Jurga: Equestrian Sport News | Scoop.it

@FranJurga writes: This will be veterinarian Dr. Brendan Furlong’s fifth and last Olympic Games. In this Q and A with USEF's Joanie Morris, he recalls some memorable moments in his time with the US eventing team.

Dr Furlong cleared one big hurdle this morning when Team USA's horses cleared the first veterinary inspection. But that's just the first of many hurdles to come over the next four days.

Congratulations to Dr. Furlong, and thanks!

Olympic Dressage: @RafalcaRomney Puts Her Tongue Over the Bit and Into Her Cheek for a Village Voice Interview

Olympic Dressage: @RafalcaRomney Puts Her Tongue Over the Bit and Into Her Cheek for a Village Voice Interview | Fran Jurga: Equestrian Sport News | Scoop.it

An indelicate question for a lady first: How old are you?

I'm a 15-year-old Oldenburg warmblood mare. Translation: I'm pretty as hell.

Do you prefer Romneycare or Obamacare?

I didn't know there was a difference, but I can assure you neither is as good as Rafalcacare.

I read that you traveled to England via FedEx. What's that like?

I could have done without all the packing tape and being shoved into a drop-box...

Read the entire interview on the Village Voice web site; click on the big bold headline at the top of this window to read it.

@FranJurga writes: @RafalcaRomney is destined for the broodmare band, so her days as a media darling may be coming to an end. I have to say, I'll miss her on Twitter.

(But, then again, she may just have more time to tweet now that she doesn't have to train.)

The Village Voice cornered the outspoken mare for a Q and A; my favorite part: their assumption that the famous warmblood stallion Rubenstein (and by extension, his offspring, Rafalca) is Jewish, based on the name.

(All in good fun, read it for humor's sake, not politics'!)

Olympic Politicos: Romney Puts Horse-Sized Distance Between Himself and Dressage | NBC News

Olympic Politicos: Romney Puts Horse-Sized Distance Between Himself and Dressage | NBC News | Fran Jurga: Equestrian Sport News | Scoop.it

Much is made during the Olympics of the robust support systems needed to send an Olympian into competition. The parents, families and employers who rally around their athlete to get them to the games. The village it takes to make Olympic dreams come true.

But for Mitt Romney, whose wife Ann’s horse Rafalca will compete in the Olympic event of dressage, he makes it clear it’s really not his thing.

@FranJurga writes: Mitt Romney is having an awkward day. His interview with NBC News suggests that he is blase about his wife's horse being chosen to represent the country he hopes to lead.

I'm sure NBC would have preferred a "Hey, everyone, tune in to NBC's Olympic coverage and watch Ann's horse!"

Romney's offhand criticisms of Olympic planning in London initiated a response from Prime Minister Cameron.

If he ever hopes to mee the Queen, he'd better warm up the horse talk...Or just send Ann.

Olympic Dressage: Rafalca vs. Stephen Colbert – Discover LEQ Blog

Olympic Dressage: Rafalca vs. Stephen Colbert – Discover LEQ Blog | Fran Jurga: Equestrian Sport News | Scoop.it

It was  a pas de deux of wits. It caused a political pirouette. A sarcastic shoulder-in transitioned to a  salute with a beer bottle. Comedian Stephen Colbert has dedicated two monologues to dressage, the US Equestrian Federation has responded in kind and let's hope the world's not done chuckling about dressage yet.

On the new Olympic blog, Fran Jurga shares videos from comedian Stephen Colbert and USEF's response; she ponders Rafalca and the Romneys' effect on the London Olympic dressage...(click headline to read story)

Olympic Dressage: Ann Romney 'Thrilled' by Rafalca's Olympic Debut | ABCnews.com

Olympic Dressage: Ann Romney 'Thrilled' by Rafalca's Olympic Debut | ABCnews.com | Fran Jurga: Equestrian Sport News | Scoop.it
Rafalca, the horse famously co-owned by Ann Romney, performed strongly Thursday morning on the first day of Olympics dressage.

After eight previous pairs they earned a score of 70.2. There are still more riders to go tomorrow including the rest of Team USA, but they are in a good place to continue on to the next phase on August 7.

@FranJurga writes: We had Zara Phillips and The British Royals for cameras to cameo during evening and now, during dressage, we have cuts to Ann Romney, wife of the presumptive Republican presidential-candidate, Mitt Romney.

By now, her horse's unusual name, Rafalca, is a household word in America. Will the horse's name start trending as a baby name? Or will boats be christened the Rafalca II? It will be fun to see!

But one thing's for sure: dressage is trending.

Does no one in the mainstream media notice that a Danish princess was riding?  Or that Jordanian prince, married to the ruler of a key Middle Eastern nation, is head of this entire show?
