Why not have your computer read aloud to you?


I see this technology as a way to differentiate the reading experiences of students.  We know listening vocabulary is always greater than reading vocabulary.  Why not have your computer read aloud to you?

Almost 25 years ago, I wrote a widely-read and discussed paper that was entitled: “A True Test: Toward More Authentic and Equitable Assessment” that was published in the Phi Delta Kappan. I believe the phrase was my coining, made when I worked with Ted Sizer at the Coalition of Essential Schools, as a way of describing “true” tests as opposed to merely academic and unrealistic school tests. I first used the phrase in print in an article for Educational Leadership entitled “Teaching to the (Authentic) Test” in the April 1989 issue.

This article offers great insight into what authentic assessment is. It was very helpful in telling me precisely what authentic assessment is and how it can be used in the classroom. The author’s main point is that many people and educators have ruined the meaning of authentic assessment so he wants to clear the air and be very direct with his definition of authentic assessment. It will certainly try to implement authentic assessment into my classroom and teaching. Authentic assessment is much needed in our “standardized testing world.” If a teacher uses authentic assessment right they can help their students more fully and deeply understand the material they are being assessed on as well as grow in many “real world” skills. Authentic assessment provides a way in which students can take ownership of what they have learned and how they can apply it.

"I have sat through many 50 minute lectures in my life.  Notice how I wrote that sentence "sat through"... was I always engaged?  Probably not.  Is it realistic to be engaged for a full 50 minute block?  Probably not.  So how does one go about maximizing engagement in a distance course with video.  Well, is the best strategy to record a 50 minute lecture video?  Probably not."

This post is born out of a discussion I had with a fellow teacher on the Facebook page of Educational Technology and Mobile Learning on the differences between summative and formative assessment. Luckily this discussion coincided with me reading Frey and Fisher's book " Literacy 2.0 : Reading and Writing in The 21st Century Classroom." and there was a section in which the authors talked about these differences in a subtle way by referring to formative assessment as assessment for learning and summative assessment as assessment of learning.

This is a classic video from the University of Wisconsin-Madison that will open your empathy eyes and help you see (and hear) what it is like to use a screen reader. 


Accessibility is essential for all users. Section 508 (the ADA of the Internet) has been around for a long time.  UDL is making strides in course design.  Technology is improving... Still this information may be new to many.  Watch and imagine you were dependent on technology to read online.

The National Center on Universal Design for Learning has compiled a set of resources on the "What", "Why" and "How" of UDL and CCSS.

 

"The CCSS can be considered the "What" in education, i.e., the goals and expectations. It is the destination we wish our students to reach. In light of that, UDL can be considered the "How" in education, i.e., the curriculum and instructional framework teachers use to plan their lessons. In other words, UDL and the CCSS are complementary: the UDL framework provides educators with the means to maximize student attainment of the CCSS."
