The Innovator’s Challenge: Fighting Back !

The Innovator’s Challenge: Fighting Back ! | Management - Innovation -Technology and beyond | Scoop.it

Even though companies want innovation, resistance to it is strong. After all, innovative ideas, by their very nature, are risky. They are likely to cause some form of change, and people are naturally fearful of change, and people are naturally fearful of change. A new disruptive innovation might be seen as a threat to someone’s job or their status in the organization. People worry that a highly innovative project might steal away some of their resources in terms of budget and manpower !

Fouad Bendris's insight:

As you generate new ideas, you also need to make people aware of them. Create visual images of your new concepts, or build small prototypes. That helps bring your ideas to life. It gives you a way to show off your pipeline and the long term potential of your business unit ...

Hackers Could Commandeer New Planes Through Passenger Wi-Fi ! | Management - Innovation -Technology and beyond | Scoop.it

SEVEN YEARS AFTER the Federal Aviation Administration first warned Boeing that its new Dreamliner aircraft had a Wi-Fi design that made it vulnerable to hacking, a new government report suggests the passenger jets might still be vulnerable. Boeing 787 Dreamliner jets, as well as Airbus A350 and A380 aircraft, have Wi-Fi passenger networks that use the same network as the avionics systems of the planes, raising the possibility that a hacker could hijack the navigation system or commandeer the plane through the in-plane network, according to the US Government Accountability Office, which released a report about the planes today.

A hacker would have to first bypass a firewall that separates the Wi-Fi system from the avionics system !

Find Your Innovation Rheticus ! | Management - Innovation -Technology and beyond | Scoop.it

The great astronomer and mathematician Nicolaus Copernicus revolutionized our thinking about the cosmos.  Prior to Copernicus, the prevailing theory of astronomy, first articulated by Artistotle in 5th century B.C., postulated that the sun, stars, and planets all revolved around the Earth.  The Greek scholar Ptolemy expanded upon this concept in the 2nd century A.D. and documented the concentric spheres that made up the orbits of the various celestial bodies around the Earth.  The heliocentric view of our solar system that emerged from calculations and observations by Copernicus, upended the geocentric view and serves as the foundation of modern astronomy !

The right principles: Integrity, Responsibility, Forgiveness, and Compassion? There are potentially two more.

1) One is the pursuit of excellence. That’s partly included in the definition of responsibility and the desire to leave the world a better place. It’s especially important in health care.

2) The other is the courage to do the right thing even when it’s difficult or painful ...

If you can't talk to your colleagues, this is the design language for you ! | Management - Innovation -Technology and beyond | Scoop.it

A new design language aimed at helping companies build services - and get IT and non-IT staff communicating better in the process - is being developed in Norway. Like many other diagramming systems, it uses symbols and connectors to help people plan and illustrate how services should work and how customers will interact with them - and it's named, aptly, Visual. Visual is designed to let businesses document their "customer journey," or how their users progress through using a service. It logs each contact users have with a service, such as receiving an email or SMS confirmation, and records the points at which the customer is handed over to a different part of the service or new unit in the company !

Design Is Eating The World !

Design Is Eating The World ! | Management - Innovation -Technology and beyond | Scoop.it

Over the past 20 years, we’ve seen a radical shift toward design as a fundamental source of value. It used to be that design was a relatively narrow field, but today it’s become central to product performance and everybody needs to be design literate. To get an idea of where its all going, I looked in on how Autodesk is promoting design as a basic skill.

The Evolution Of Design

The industrial revolution democratized consumption.  By rationalizing the production process, things were made vastly cheaper and more plentiful.   The average person living in a developed country today has access to more products and services than even royalty did a century ago !

Fouad Bendris's insight:

Stanford researchers develop safe, effective aluminum battery ! | Management - Innovation -Technology and beyond | Scoop.it

Stanford researchers have developed a new aluminum ion battery that could charge a phone in less than a minute. According to the researchers, the battery would be an affordable and safe alternative to current, commercial batteries. The new aluminum battery minimizes the fire hazard associated with conventional lithium batteries and is also much more durable. While a typical lithium-ion battery can be recharged 1,000 times, the aluminum ion battery could endure as many as 7,500 cycles. The battery could take the place of traditional AA and AAA batteries, according to Yingpeng Wu, a chemistry postdoc !

Proper questioning has become a lost art. How Big Ideas Are Built !

How Big Ideas Are Built ! | Management - Innovation -Technology and beyond | Scoop.it
Companies often ask themselves why their innovation efforts seem to produce so few truly game-changing ideas. Why are they mostly getting only lukewarm suggestions for incremental improvements rather than radical new concepts for revolutionizing their industries? How can an organization get dramatically better at generating big, breakthrough ideas?
Fouad Bendris's insight:

When Albert Einstein came up with his revolutionary theory of special relativity, and shortly afterward with E = mc2, it didn’t just come to him out of the blue while he was sitting at his desk staring idly out of the window. At the turn of the twentieth century, when Einstein graduated, the great conundrum of physics was the apparent incompatibility between Newtonian laws of mechanics on the one hand and the new science of electromagnetism on the other, because it turned out that light did not behave as those classical laws predicted. This was the seemingly unsolvable puzzle that the young graduate Albert Einstein ambitiously determined he would try to solve !

One Size Doesn’t Fit All Innovation !

One Size Doesn’t Fit All Innovation ! | Management - Innovation -Technology and beyond | Scoop.it

Steve Blank, the father of Lean Startup, comments on the Lean Startup vs. Design Thinking discussion !

Often I hear spirited defenses for Customer Development versus Design Thinking or vice versa, and my reaction is to slowly back out of these faith-based conversations. For large companies, it isn’t about which process is right – the reality is that we probably haven’t invented the right process yet. It’s about whether your company is satisfied with the speed, quality and size of the innovations being produced. And whether you’re applying the right customer discovery process to the right situation. No one size fits all ...

Fouad Bendris's insight:

As for Lean Startup vs. Design Thinking we can make the following differentiation:

• Both approaches target at matching problems and suitable solutions, i.e. validating a problem-solution fit.
• Lean Startup mostly starts with an existing vision, technology or product. It primarily aims at speed and “good enough” decision making with limited time and resources.
• Design Thinking is based on properly understanding customer needs and iteratively prototyping to meet those needs with a satisfying solution. It primarily aims at doing the right things (i.e. serving a well-understood need properly) before investing time and resources ...

Steve Perlman Thinks He Can Completely Change How Cellphone Service Is Delivered | Management - Innovation -Technology and beyond | Scoop.it

It has been taken for granted that cell service faces inevitable slowdowns as more users look to grab more data from ever-more-crowded cell towers using a limited amount of wireless spectrum.

It’s why even ultra-fast LTE service starts to bog down in dense urban areas as more and more people adopt data-hungry smartphones and tablets. To avoid interference, each device essentially takes turns grabbing the information it needs, meaning that as more users try to connect, the speeds get further away from the theoretical maximum !

Fouad Bendris's insight:

“[The] pCell is the most significant advance in radio wave optimization since Tesla’s 1930s experiments and the birth of analog cellular in the early 1980s,” Doherty said in an email interview. “I do not use the word ‘breakthrough’ often. This one deserves it.”
